I dont have the full VIN number, but I need to know the possible year for wiring purposes, I will describe what the motor had ect. dash said VIN 8, had a oil cooler, small distributor, center bolt valve covers, V-belt accesories with serpentine alternator belt also the tpi manifold was the vortech style where the center bolts go in almost vertically, had GTA emblems but Im not sure if it was a real GTA, the headlight has wiring has a weird box mounted above the the wiper motor, no VATS
thanks
thanks
Sounds like an 87'.
1.) Engine code 8, 350 TPI. Only available from 87'-92'
2.) No VATS, Only 87'-88'
3.) V-belt accessories, only 87'
The small distributor, center bolt valve covers, and vertical center intake manifold bolts all comply with the 87' model year 350TPI also.

GTA350
a couple other things the car also had plastic box square looking that connected to the tpi unit and sat behind the radiator, had a electronic speedo, I snagged all the dash and engine electronics to do a tpi conversion on my 82 trans am, the injectors also looked very different than a set I bought for a 305 once, if these are in fact 350 injectors would there be a part number on them or the fuel rails to verify they are 350 parts, and do you know the engine suffix code for a 350 if this is indeed a 350 I'm going to buy it and put it in my trans am.

Agreed on the 87. Why not print out a list of casting numbers (www.mortec.com) to bring with you and find out what block it is?

can anyone on the board post some very detailed pictures of there factory vacuum line/air injection/charcoal canister/ emission hose routing as well as how the hvac lines are routed ... no hurry Im aways from that, also has anyone run a tpi mass airflow with a mechanical fan and shroud
Jproz,
The box behind the radiator is an airbox. It is the stock Firebird TPI air intake setup for 85'-87' cars. That setup does not flow particularly well, and as a result the Firebirds for those years were rated 10hp less than the Camaros. If you could find an 88'-89' air intake system, that would be better. Those ones are only 5hp less than the Camaros, but by replacing the air filter canister with a conical K&N open element filter, then they are the same.
As far as the injectors and fuel rail, the rail would be the same and have the same part number for both 305 and 350 TPI engines. You said the injectors looked very different than 305 injectors. Were these 305 TBI, or TPI inectors? Anyway, the TPI engines did have an injector manufacturer change somehwere around 87', someone else may be able to help with the specifics. There should be a part number stamped in the injectors that you would be and to ID them with.
As far as the engine suffix code, I don't know off hand. www.mortec.com would be a good place to start, along with the Firebird Red Book, and the Camaro White Book. The numbers you are looking for should be on the front right on the engine stamped into the top of the block in front of the cylinder head, and also on the left rear of the block behind the left cylinder head where the transmission bolts up. The number on the rear of the block will be casted into it and not stamped.
The digital dash was available on 87' and 88' Trans-ams, and GTA's. Sounds like it's a pretty good find.
