Whats she worth?

This car is by no means for sale. However if the price is right I'd let it go. Every body panel on this car including the floors are new except the rear quarter panels. The engine and trans are stock. Interior is in ok condition. This car was painted in a auto body program so it was used as a learning tool to teach students how to paint. It is by no means perfect but for me being on a budget at the time due to still being in high school it turned out extremely well. It burns a little oil, the suspension is a little sloppy but for 30 years old it runs, drives and goes down the road straight. All of my money went into making the car rust free and look pretty now it just needs an engine and trans. I know I am missing some things so please ask any questions that you may have below.

Specs:
1984 Z28
130k Miles
5.0 HO 4 barrel carb
Automatic trans
Black interior (Still have the stock interior)
17 inch chrome rims ( Still have the stock rims)
Magnaflow muffler

Cons:
Leaks atf from front trans seal
Burns a little oil
Could use a little tlc under the hood
Could use shocks all around
Interior is a little faded

Pros:
New rear seal on trans
New plugs and wires
New rims and tires
Fresh paint

Small chips from the gf's boots

Rock chips on LR quarter panel.

How she looked when I bought it

The first country cruse

Re: Whats she worth?

Id keep it... maybe rebuild the 305, leave everything stock like that. The 84 305 ho is a very desirable car. Did it ever have the T5 man tran? Nice car.

Also, are the fenders aftermarket? If yes, where did you get them? Did they fit ok?
Thanks

Re: Whats she worth?

It's always been an auto. The fenders fit great I think there gm remanufactured fenders I got them for about $75 a piece from some dude on Craigslist. As for the engine the 305 will be the first to go I'm thinking a 383 stroker if I hold on to the car.

Re: Whats she worth?

I hear ya, "383 stroker"..... If I could do it all over again, I would either leave it stock, or put a LM7 in. Strokers are fun, but cost a pretty penny, even if you do all the work. And your not guaranteed 10k miles out of them. Unless you do a crate or something. but stilll. You can get a complete pull out LM7 for 500-1000 bucks. Slap a better cam in it, fast intake, bigger injectors and you will have a very reliable engine for under 2k. and prob over 400hp....

(edit) If you do tear into it, Keep track of all the engine parts ect.. Just that intake with the dual snorks is worth 250... getting hard to find some of those parts....

Thanks I definetly look into that LM7 but my question still goes unanswered whats it worth Id like to think 6k-8k seems like a fair price? Anyone agree or disagree?

How is it not in good condition? Its a rust free with new paint and ok interior. The engine bay could use some work but other than that its an awesome car.

Re: Whats she worth?

It all depends on what someone is willing to pay. 6-8k is a bit high. These 3rd gens are starting to come around but not that far. Youd have to list the cars options and give some more pics of interior/under car for a better appraisal. Id say 3-6k tops. It does have nice paint and is rust free. however that color combo narrows your market. If It was my car and I was to insure that car, Id put 8k worth insurance towards it just in case.

(edit) I looked at it again and I think you could sell it for 5k. Might have to do some good advertizing and pass up some offers. If you find some young teenager who loves that color and has rich parents, hell, you could get 10k maybe.

Re: Whats she worth?

I live in Wisconsin and trying to find a rust free Third Gen is pretty hard to find. Yes in know my color choice is a bit extravagant and orange isn't everyones favorite color. I built this car to my liking just as everyone else would. I never thought of selling it but with me working part time, going to college, living on my own, paying my own tuition and buying a different daily driver the money from this car would help my finances greatly. Thanks for your honest opinion -=Z28=-

Leaks atf from front trans seal
Burns a little oil
Could use a little tlc under the hood
Could use shocks all around
Interior is a little faded
It burns a little oil, the suspension is a little sloppy but for 30 years old
sentimental value buyers wont pay for
ultimately its only worth what someone will pay

Re: Whats she worth?

Yes I understand that sentimental value means nothing to the buyer. All of those things would be fixed before I would sell it. I just wanted to know what I could get for a nice looking Third Gen that has been taken care of. Most of the things listed are small problems that could be handled in a weekend. All of the hard work has already been done.

Re: Whats she worth?

I was going to say your description hurts you too... BUT, you are just being honest and open so you could get an rough estimate. Honestly that list looks a lot more frightening than it is....

To me you just described a UNmolested 3rd gen. beauty is in the eye of the beholder... Im telling you, that car is pretty desirable. Not too many 84 HO unmolested cars out there.. What car that is 30 years old, doesnt need suspension/seal work. If I was looking for a car to buy, this would be the car I would try to buy. Obviously id want to go see it and lay under it. The only thing that really limits your market is the paint.

Keep it!

Re: Whats she worth?

Like it is maybe 2k. Paint it back original color or at least something normal and not so loud,, clean up engine bay and freshen and reseal the engine and it may bring 5k. I actually like the L69 and I agree that this could be made into a real nice car. It will take some work though. Good luck with it.

Re: Whats she worth?

I have 6500 in the whole car. Everyone that I talk to or that has come up to me loves this car and color choice. I've only had one older gentleman say I should of left it the original white and tan. 2k maybe down south but up north that's insulting go look on wisconsin craigslist for something that looks this good and actually moves for 2k.

Re: Whats she worth?

hehe... damn southerernes. jk. Dont get us wrong, the paint is very nice and I bet you do get tons of complements. However when selling or getting an estimate, the color only applies to a certain group.(there is a reason you get so many complements, not too many cars look like that, however, that doesn't mean everyone wants there car to look like that) I too looked around to compare prices. If you are to sell, Id paint it and fix those issues. make it a lot easier to sell and prob fetch more $$

Re: Whats she worth?

Its tough to do what you did to a car and try to make money too.. If you didnt have access to a bodyshop, i bet youd have more than 6500 into it. I have more than that into my paint and body now and the car still needs to be put together.....(this fall!!!!!)

Re: Whats she worth?

Just a little information for you, I just bought a full set of KYB struts & shocks with Eibach PRO kit lowering springs on eBay for $382.51 that includes shipping. New Inner & outer tie-rods, idler arm & link bar $67.00 & you can get complete polyurethane bushings real affordable now as well.
As far as what she's worth. ... about half what you put Into it ( unless you find that one buyer, that just has to have it).

Re: Whats she worth?

Not to dig up a somewhat old thread but I've decieded to keep the car. Out of 15-20 cars in my class I placed third at my towns local car show for 2 years in a row! Now to some of you it may not sound like much but for me its really showed me how much of a cool car it actually is. Here are a few pictures.

Re: Whats she worth?

Congratulations on the trophy and don't mind the haters. You do need to realize that very few cars are worth what you put into them if they need a lot of work to start with. You have built yours to match your taste and that may not match the taste of those who are looking so that will effect the value as well.

Keep it & enjoy it!

BTW - I like it but I'm a fan of mild/period customs so that helps.

My 73 TA.

Re: Whats she worth?

Thanks guys and nice rides! A guy I work with has an 89 Iroc with a 5 speed and he said I could have it for 800 bucks to swap it from auto to standard. The engine is fully built bored .60 over 305tpi it's been sitting for a few year's though. I'm also am not to fond on the whole bored .60 over. What do you guys think? I'd mainly use it for the drivetrain and suspension but for 800 bucks you cant beat it. He also says its high 400s for torque which I don't believe. Either he sells it to me or it's going to rot away in his brothers yard. The body and interior are junk (why its sitting).

Re: Whats she worth?

I wouldn't buy it .
JMO, but it's a 305..... that's. 060 over ( no longevity ).
It might make 300-350 horse at the crank, but it's been sitting for a couple of years. .. just too many variables that could be problematic.
