Guys, anyone know if the numbers and codes for a V8 and a V6 are the same? My insurance is charging me more because they just discovered my car is a V8. They told me that the numbers and codes for a V6 and V8 are the same. I have a 1990 IROC 350.

No the only thing the Insurance Company goes off of is the VIN. So if you swap a V-8 into a 4cyl. the insurance company will insure your car for less. (However get into a large accident and you could be in trouble for not disclosing all the information about your car).
But the 8th digit of your VIN is the engine code
8 = TPI 350 (Your engine)
F = TPI 305
H = carb. 305 (LG4)
G = carb. 305 HO (L69)
Those are just the ones off the top of my head. The complete listing is on the tech data page.
Hope that helped, Later, Garrett

When I purchased insurance, the only differentiation was between IROC-Z cars and non-IROC-Z cars. Both of my Camaros have V-8's, but the IROC was more expensive to insure (even though both are 305's). I believe they went by the VIN for their determination.

Yes they both had the 305 but where they both the same 305's ?? (LG4, L69, LB9, LO3). Maybe they are (Insurance companies differ)Originally posted by drop-top IROC

I was totally open with them. They quoted me one figure and now they are saying that, on their own, figured out my car is a V8 so they need to charge me an extra 30 bucks. They also told me that the numbers or codes for a V6 are the same as a V8??? Thats why they didnt figure it out before.

No, and that was partially my point. The RS is an LO3 ("E"), the IROC is an LB9 ("F"). Apparently, when they run the VIN on their computer, it tells them to charge accordingly...
The V6 and V8 could be charged the same amount if they are not IROC-Z's, the IROC-Z (or 'Z28' in some cases) designation ("F" or "8" engine code) is what kicks the premium up.

When I got insurance, It was 120 a month nomader what I drove! It was the same for my v8 camaro sports car, as it was for my 4 door 4 cilinder jetta.

Total dollar value to replace the vehicle factors in. Also what the car was optioned with. And certain cars fit a certain symbol category. So it's hard to say.
