Instrument Guage Question

My buddy just got an 87 Camaro, its a base model 6 cylinder with the 2.8 liter. His guages like amps, temp, oil, do not have needles, they just seem to light up if a problem is present. I never saw this before, is that how the base model guages work?

Thanks

Yup, those are the idiot lights that were standard on the very base model cars.

Tahts what my 87 SC 305 4bl came with. I bought a 115 mph one off ebay quickly and switched it out and now it has all the gauges. Still have to switch a few sensors to make it work correctly.
