well your 86 is the aero pkg style made from 85-90.The exterior is the same on all trans am's and some firebirds with the sport(a.k.a t/a) appearance package.Technically all parts are interchangeable for the exception of the rear seat belts.Aarly third gens had lap belts later ones had shoulder belts. All i think of for now its 2 am

From: Doghouse ······································ Car: 1989 Formula 350 Vert Engine: 350 L98 Transmission: 700R4 Axle/Gears: B&W 3.27
Car: 87 Formula T-Top, 87 Formula HT
Engine: 5.1L TPI, 5.0L TPI
Transmission: 700R4, M5

The rear seatbelts with shoulder harness were intorduced in 1989 as standard equipment, Actually the interior trim piece is different as well for the rear hatch area...

From 1982-1988 since the rear seatbelt was a simple lap belt, there was hole in the trim piece where the belt would peak through... Starting in 1989 with the advent of the rear shoulder harness, that hole could no longer be used because of the way the extra strap was attached... There was also an extra hole on the trim piece to accomidate the shoulder harness belts, which was covered by another plasic piece...

ALSO if you have a single fold down back seat then the split back seats will not work UNLESS you weld in a pipe as a reciever for the split back. HOWEVER a single fold down seat back should work on either.

Steering Wheels... I am not sure what steering wheel you should have, but what I knwo is 87 was the last year for the 3 spoke "Formula" steering wheel.. I belive it may have been the same as 1985 & 1986. I have a 1983 T/A steering wheel that is very similar, but its slightly different...

88 & 89 went to a 4 spoke style that was similar to most of the Pontiac models of the era.

90-92 Steering wheel had an Airbag.

Dash & Instrument Panel
1982-1985 Cable driven Speedo
1986-1992 Electronic Speedo... All the components are pretty much interchangable... I am not sure about the cluster assembly.

Dash
1982-1984 Dash style 1
1985 Unknown
1986-1989 Dash are all the same or similar enough
1990-1992 Dash looks like 86-89 style, BUT there completly differnt except Dash pad (Glare Shield)

Center console
82-84 Type 1 ( Attaches to dash )
85-92 Type 2 ( The radio pod hangs down but the Center console is seperate )

Seats
The seats are all interchangable, BUT there are some differences...

Door panels... Same thing as the seats, but there are different Trim levels, but most of them look similar...
The Biggest exception is the 87-89 Custom and Deluxe interior, they were molded, rather than a flat piece of cardboard. I believe starting in 1990 the door panels are similar, to the 82-98 Standard design, except the trim piece that goes around the Door handle and Lock.

Also keep in mind that if your car has the electric pull down rear hatch, the trim piece is larger to accomidate the Mechanism... I forget what year this started that if it was 86 or 87.

Hope that helps some...
