Possibly buying an '86 Z28...

I may be buying an '86 Z28 soon. Here's a list of the info i've got on it:

1986 Camaro Z28
72,000 miles

LG4 305
T-5 trans
T-tops
GFX

has some paint fading on the hood and rear decklid. There's a small crack in the rear bumper. The dashboard is also cracked, which i believe is a common problem on the third gens? The weatherstripping looks like it needs a little work. The tires are OK.

All in all, the car looks to be in decent condition. Relatively low miles, considering the model year, no visible leaks, no rust, etc. THe price is $2000 o.b.o.

Now, i have a few questions. I've been doing some research on here, gathering info and such. I know the LG4 came with the peanut cam, the intake and exhaust are restrictive as are the heads, etc. etc.

Question 1: What 1/4 times am i looking at BASELINE? i'm assuming high 16's.

Question 2: What problems should I look for? were there any common problems with the '86s? Any common problems with LG4's?

My plan is to buy the car and make it a project sleeper. I'd leave the appearance as is, since it doesn't look like much. I'd also build up the LG4, since throwing away a 72,000 mile motor seems senseless to me. I'd be doing some serious weight reduction (anything that isn't vital to the car running would get tossed). When all is said and done, it should be a nice little car to screw around with people

I've got that same car. Go for it man, it's a 5 speed. The LG4 is really pretty crappy though, but if you want some good power, getting a 350 is the way to go. But hey, 5 speeds are tough to find, or atleast by me they are.

you should be faster than high 16s, but not much more. I have an 86 with an lg4 and an A4, pegleg 3.23, and ran 16.5 stock.

ok, that's not so bad. with the T5 and 3.73's, i should be able to pull off a low 16. I was expecting much worse. The car isn't too far off from my old '98 3.8L Camaro.

It will actually be slightly slower than your '98, but there are several relatively cheap things you can do to wake the LG4 up nicely.

Gears, air intake (open element or dual snorkel), headers back exhaust.
