What's this one worth?
Its far from a collector's item at this point, but it caught my eye in the local Auto Trader and seems like a decent deal on a solid car...
Specs:
'92 Camaro RS 305 TBI
Automatic
T-tops
PW, PL, P-mirrors, P-trunk release
Upgraded custom cloth interior
Upgraded luggage compartment cargo cover, split-folding rear seat
Factory CD Player!!!!
82k miles
Purple Haze Metallic with grey cloth
$2,995
Condition:
Engine runs perfect, oil is clean
Transmission fluid clean
New Toyo Proxxes tires in the correct 235/55/16 size
Wheels slightly oxidized
Paint chipped on spoiler, hood and nose. Chips painted over with non-matching purple touch up paint
Interior clean, dirty driver's side front carpet
No rips in seats
Needs dashpad (2 cracks), RH A/C vent and driver PW motor
Lexan t-tops look AWFUL...you can't even see through them!!!
A/C blows ice cold
History:
One female owner, traded in to local Chevy dealer last week.
Opinions? I think its worth $3k. You could get away with painting the hood, nose and decklid, and the car would be 80% perfect paintwize, with only a couple minor chips otherwise, and a small rust spot at the 3:00 position on the RR wheelwell. I would get used glass t-tops, a new PW motor, a used dash pad, and a new carpet. For about $800-1,000, I figure the car would be near mint. The upholstery is in great shape, as are the door panels and the console. I'm planning to drive it tomorrow.
The only thing I don't like is the color...purple is known as a girly color around here (no offense to those who own purple Camaros!!!). I don't have the $$ right now, and I want an IROC anyway...so this would be for my girlfriend. She loves the purple, and frankly I might add the silver heritage stripes to it too after the repaint!!!
Opinions?? I just want a third gen back in the driveway really, really bad
Sitting in it today really made me miss my RS...

If it was for me, I'd consider looking harder for an IROC or a Z28. Although, I have to admit even a 305 TBI with a few bolt ons might be enough for me to be content...I already have my fast car
But, I have to admit my garage will always seem lonely without an IROC in there...so my search continues.
But for my girlfriend, who will drive this car 5-6k miles per year and does not care about how fast the car is, this car is perfect for her. The TBI will be bulletproof and economical, its quick enough to have fun but not so fast that she'll get in too much trouble, the insurance should be a little lower and the price to buy it will be lower too. If this car was a Z28, I could easily see it at $4,500-$5,000, even with the work it needs. But for her, for what she needs, I think its perfect with a little work. She just wants a third gen Camaro, and the fact that it has a V8, t-tops and is purple make it perfect for her...

Well, apparently around 8,000 '92s got it...I imagine most were in Z28s, but I know this isn't the first RS I've seen with one. Granted, that was years ago I saw the other one (in a Heritage red/black RS vert).
I can't stop thinking about this car today

Collectability wise... Historcally the cars that have value in the future are those with the big engine in them. Get a L98 car, or at least an LB9, forget the RS's & Firebirds with the Base Engine, etc.
Even the Formulas, Trans Ams, Z28's and IROCs with the base engines I really do not see as having a high level of desiarbility in the future. Anything less than the CFI, HO, or TPI engines will not pull as much money in the future, History tells all.
I know of few high value cars that has a 6 for example, everyone wants the big engine for the year.

I agree with those of you who are saying to get a more desirable car. If this was for me and me alone, while I like it the fact that its not at least a true Heritage RS with a 5 speed keep me from considering it. But consider this...its for my girlfriend. She does not care that it does not have TPI. She does not care about the future collectible value of the car. She wants an older Camaro and wants to have fun pampering it, washing it, driving it and occassionally showing it.
I have no doubt the collectibility of this car is limited for at least the next 10 years. And even then, its still an RS. However, the key draws to this car are a) low price, b) V8, c) t-tops, d) solid condition and e) low price
I cannot get a solid TPI IROC for $3k, at least around here.
Which is the basic question...for what this car is, is it a decent deal? I say yes...I'm going to try to talk it down to $2,600 or so, at which point we can afford to buy it together (we're currently just about married anyway
). I want her to have a Camaro, as she already has a great '99 Grand Am we bought her a few months ago that will be her daily driver. She's always wanted a Camaro, and this one is perfect for what she wants. She'll keep it for years, strip it for a full repaint eventually, and won't care less that its not a Z28 or IROC.
Like I said, she wants an older V8 Camaro with t-tops and nothing more. An IROC is out of the question due to cost. So, in summary, is this particular car worth $3k?
Keep in mind gentlemen...I'm in the process of stashing away cash myself for my own IROC. I'm 90% sure I'm selling my house next spring and buying another (second house at a ripe old 25
), and will cash out enough equity at that point to buy my dream...a 20-30k mile '88-'89 IROC for $10k-12k that she won't touch
So, enough talking me into an IROC for the moment...
Is this particular RS worth $3k, or should I do some more hunting? It seems worth it to me, but I want some other opinions. Sorry for the novel!!
