Third Gen RS/SS/IROC/Z-28 and Berlinetta

Hey all - I'm new here, but I just picked up my new project car...more about that later...

I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. It seems like the information would be out there somewhere, but I'm suprised I couldn't find it yet.

What is the difference in the following third-gen Camaro types:
  • RS
  • SS
  • IROC
  • Z-28
  • Berlinetta

Now I know that the Berlinetta is the suckage, but what makes these models different? I don't need ultra-specifics, but general conceptual differences would be great.

Also - I'm not worried about finding out what my two cars are - I know that they are '83 Z-28 and an '88 Sport Coupe.

Thanks in advance,
J

rs = rally sport, the base model 3rd gen basically.. v6's or if your lucky, the 305 TBI!

ss= no such thing in 82-92

iroc=85-90, same thing as the z28, just badged as the iroc-z(28) , gets the 350/auto TPI or 305/manual TPI.. very rarely got a TBI as well..

z28= the performance model for all other years same as above, 82-92

berlinetta, the girly camaro, digital cluster and was more oriented towards.. luxury...

It did not have a digital cluster on ther berly. well only in 1894-1986 there was the option for the "Star wars" cluster which basically deleted the normal radio and put a radio pod instead, and have the digital speedo and tack readouts. also everything was bush button. Those are pretty rare to find anymore..

now.. The berlinetta is not really all that bad.. came with plenty of options that you could get standard on the z-28. Basically the berly if you look at it looks alot like the sport coupe, only it was more on the luxury side of things, leather int, a cushy suspension... ect. But of mine came stock with the 305 and 700r4.... Sooo.. as for them being gurly.. not really.. since it was better than the SC (my opinion it was actually the base model at least the restoration manual says it was in 1983) and it was better than the v-6 RS coupes.

So basically the major differences were interior and suspension.. after that most all the ones i have seen are comparable. v-8, analog gauges, 14" aluminum wheels. (SC had 14" too, Z-28 had 15".) nothing wrong with the berly at all.. Just get a wonderbar, some better suspension parts, and it is a decent car. and if you get one with no power options (and it is possible) then it is comparable in weight to the z-28.

Pretty much the berly was just the one with all the power options and the fancy int.. thats it..

Ok there was also the Sports Coupe which offered the Iron Duke ( the 4 cyl engine) & the basic v6 & v8.

The RS didnt really become the base model car until 89. When they did away with the sports coupes (even though they brought it back for the 4th gens)

With the IROC ( or International Race of Champions.) it was just upgrades. like the RS & what have you.

The Z28 has been around from the start but it saw a slight drop off from the company in 88 when Chevy decided to drop the Z28 from being used. Only to bring it back in 91 when they didnt sign the contract with IROC

the iroc was mainly a handling package, and it was the only
one to get 350(except 91-92 z28 got it) and i think it got the best gear ratio,

rs/sport coupe are the cheapest base models the rs has nicer ground effects and it was in the last 5 years 87-92,

the SS is a performance package on 4th generation camaro
starting 1996 i think,
