1992 Trans Am convertible (yellow)???
I have the opportunity to buy a yellow 92 T/A convertible, black top with black leather interior, and power everything! How rare is this car?? How many 91' and 92' convertibles were made, and how many were yellow? Of course she is the 305 T.P.I with the 700R4 auto. Another question I have is, is this the engine that everyone talks about with the "peanut sized" cam? What kind of power does it make?? Any info is appreciated. Thanx

It's a rare car. Somewhere around 800 T/As were made in 92, and that includes hardtops, T-tops, and ragtops.
As far as the peanut cam goes: Most say that the 305 TPI autos are peanut cammed. All of them. I personally don't agree, at least my car does not have that pathetic little small lobed cam within its block. Sometimes I wonder if it was the luck of the draw whether you got the small cam or not, or something determined whether you got it or not. Has anyone actually PROVED that the peanut cam exists in post 86 305 TPIs at all? As in, actually removed the cam and measured it for the lobe lift?
That motor makes 205hp/285 torque, and is good for mid/low 15s stock.

I have a 92 TA Conv Yellow with black cloth interior and black top- came with a 305TPI and T-5- 3.08 gears, my center caps have WS6 on them but I havent verified that its a WS6 car for sure - I agree it is rare
I saw an Ad on 3rdgen.org about two months ago for one with an auto trans that stated only 2 were made
I figured the old girl was rare to be a convertible a least- last model year and all- but that drive train and unibody left wwaayyy to much to be desired- I fought with myself for a while on whether to modify
Now look at me
Edelbrock Strut tower brace
SSM sub frame connectors
Global West G-load brace (sp?)
Hotchkis panhard and LCA
1LE brake upgrade front/Aluminum Drums
Custom rear suspension - more on that when I get Pics
Kuhmo 265/45/16 rear 255/50/16 front
Koni red all around
Eibach 1 inch drop springs
AFR 190 58cc
52 BBK TB
LPE 219/.525
Crane 1.6
AFPR
Hypertech custom chip
MSD 6al
Accel 8.5 wires - coil
Ram air through the vents with open Camaro like plenum
Edelbrock runners / base
355 4 bolt block
March under drive crank pulley
Sach clutch
Tremec
Summit Diff Support cover
Edelbrock tes
dual exhaust
custom cross member
Dynomax super turbo mufflers
Pioneer disc player
stock gears
She is a beautiful car real pretty - my goal is to go low 12s- 0.9-1.0 lateral- good stereo- and comfortable ride - I'll keep the body and wheels stock and then maybe, maybe I can get on the cover of Hot Rod - wouldn't that be cool!!!
I paid 15,9 in 1996 47k miles
If you can afford it I'd go for it - you'll prolly have the only stock 1992 TA conv yellow and black ever!!!!!

When people talk about the "peanut cammed" 305 TPI, that's compared to a 305 TPI/5 speed engine. The autos ALWAYS had less hp than the 5 speeds. They had 190-195 until '90, then moved to 205 for '90-'92. During this time, the 5 speeds ranged from 215-230 (depending on year, and whether it was a 'Bird or a Camaro). All '86 305 TPIs came with 190hp, though.
In my opinion, grab it and hold onto it!! Keep it stock, and that car will be worth a fortune someday! (It probably is now too).

PHS says that there were 1,253 T/As made in 1992.Here are the Figs.
405-Hard top and T-Top-5.0 wich 94 were 5spd.
663-Conv. all 5.0s wich 116 were 5spd.
185-5.7 all Auto.
For 1991 figs look at the other post on this page.
I have heard 2 different figures for the Yellow Conv. cars At the T/A NAts,one was there were 12 and the other was 9 but every1 agreed that it was the lowest color painted on the Conv. T/A.

I decided not to purchase the car, even though it may be rare, it doesn't have enough go for my liking.

Are you asking this just to be a smart *** or what? I'm asking this in all seriousness.
No, I didn't remove the cam yet. The GM shop manual also states that there is no peanut cam in 91/92 305 TPI autos, and I have timeslips to back up my statements. If my T/A is peanut cammed, then so was your 85's old engine.

I ain't trying to start World War III here, but Jim is correct in stating that you'd have to measure the cam and see if it is better for some reason. If it's stock, it isn't.
Whether you want to believe it or not, ALL 305 TPI/autos had a "smaller" cam than their 5 speed equivalents, from 1987 on. In '86, ALL 305 TPIs got the same cam, which was detuned from 1985 (215hp in '85, 190hp in '86 for Camaros.)
Your 305/auto produces 205hp stock, with the automatic. A comparable 5 speed 305 TPI makes 220hp with a single cat, or 230 with duals. No dual cats were offered on 305/autos.
Your car would be considered to have the "peanut cam" in relation to 305 TPI/5 speeds and 350 TPIs. Why GM put the smaller cam in the autos, no one really seems to know. But they did.

Haven't we already gone through this? There is ONE GM cam for the 305 TPI in 1991 and 1992. It has been proven by the GM Factory Service manual for Firebirds and Camaros of both of these years. That cam is the L98 grind. Both the 305 TPI auto and the 305 TPI 5 speed non-G92 have 205 hp, by the way. The 305 TPI 5 speed G92 has 230hp. As to the HP difference, it is most likely due to the 305 TPI G92's larger exhaust, which includes the same size Y-pipe, converters, and catback as the 350 TPI cars. The 305 TPI non-G92 has a small cat, the same size as that of the 305 TBI, a small Y-pipe (not sure if it's the same size as the 305 TBI's), and a 2 1/4" catback, (again, not sure if the 305 TBIs have this as well). That's the HP difference, and once those items that limit the 305 TPI non G92 are replaced, it runs exactly as strong as the 305 TPI G92 -- the engine that is. The G92 cars have 3.42 gears which make them faster, naturally. But as far as the engines go, that's the difference right there. Anything else is just rumor, not fact.
