help me indentify this engine.
My friend just bought an early 80s buick regal. He said that it originally had a v-6 in it and somebody put a 350 in it. when I looked under the hood something looked different about it. then it hit me, the distributor was in the front of the engine. I knew right then that it wasn't a chevy engine. So I'm wondering what engine it could be. Its a V-8 with angle plug heads that are painted blue. It has a Rochester 2-jet on it. And the Intake manifold is different in that the thermosat housing is mounted on the front of the manifold, not on top of it like chevys are. This is all that I can think of about that engine. What size do you think it could be? Didn't Buick make a 348? It might even be an olds or a pontiac engine.

I am not sure but it sounds like an older olds engine . I remember these to have the oil filler spout in the intake manifold . If not the 301 pontiac that was built up to the mid eighties before GM went corporate engines . I think these had front dist also .I know that Pontiac made the 348 in the early 60s but it looked just like a 409 with the large dents in the outside of the valve covers

Sounds like a Buick V8 to me...
In a Buick V8 the distributor goes into the timing cover. A Pontiac V8 looks almost exactly like a Chevy small block, except that it's somewhat bigger, and the intake is disconnected from the block, so there's a sheet metal lifter cover under the intake. An Olds V8 has the dist in the rear and is also bigger than a Chevy motor. A Buick V6 is all but identical to their V8 with cyls #5 & 6 left out so it's a relatively simple swap to put a 350 where a 231 was.
Buick quit making their 348 in the very early 60s, it was too small. There are like millions of Buick 350s in the world so I'd bet that's what your friend has especially since it has that 2-barrel on it. Only the little 350 got those IIRC, all the real motors got 4-barrels.

They're completely different. They have basically nothing in common.
On further thought, your motor is more than likely a 307 at the most. I don't recall any 350s coming with a DualJet, that's not even really enough carb for a 300 inch motor, it was mostly used on 6-cyls. Buick may have offered an even weenier motor than the 307 for the grocery-cart applications in the early 80s (like the Chevy 267 which also had a DualJet), I don't know. I pay no attention to that crap unless somebody in my family has a broken one or something, otherwise I RLH away from it.
