aluminum driveshaft

I recently had my formula up on the lift for the first time the other day. I noticed the the car has an aluminum driveshaft under it. Was that an option back in 88, if so is it kinda rare or something? I know that 4th gens had'em but i've never heard of one in a 3rd gen.

Yeah its not unheard of for a 3rd gen to have an aluminum driveshaft. Check your RPO sticker for "JG1" thats the RPO for the aluminum drive shaft. Ive seen more firebirds with aluminum driveshafts then I have seen camaros. My 88 GTA had one, my 89 Formula had one and my 88 IROC had one also. I will be installing one in my 87 IROC this weekend

My 88 Formula has one as well. I found out I had one when a friend of mine pointed it out to me as we were cutting off the angle muffler tips that the previous owner installed.

Several years ago, after hearing how 'rare' the JG1 alum shaft was, I decided I'd like to equip my 85 IROC with one. Long story short, I purchased one on line within 20 minutes or so. I went on to sell 60+ of them on this board. The cheapest I found was $30 shipped to me, but I averaged paying around $85. Recommended. The GM part # is 10085375 (this # can be found on the tail of the shaft on a metal tag). The Hollander exchange # is 431-3124.
