Starting Help
Hey guys, I have an old 82 that I have not worked on myself other than simple oil changes and checking fluids. I got it in my head to start to restore or at least get it running again without any guys doing it for me. I actually got it charged and running very rough yesterday. As soon as I turned it off it died immediately again. I had the battery charging for hours and it does not seem to hold a charge. I'm guessing this is the first place to start? Also, some guy told me that my tires are expired. Is this even a valid statement? Are comments like these directed at me because I'm female?
Thanks Cat

I don't know if tires have an expiration date per se, but they are date coded. Discount tire warehouses and stores sell tires that have older date codes and are not a newly manufactured tire. That's why they can sell them cheaper than the manufacturers. The rubber does have a life span and shelf life does deteriorate the rubber. That's why tires dry rot over time. If the tires are old, replace them if not just for safety sake.

Staring out

Thanks for the input on the battery and I'm checking the tires for a date. They appear to be in good condition with nothing that looks like what I think dry rot should look like. I drove on these tires for 2 mie to test run the car after starting it yesterday and they seemed ok. I will look into new ones when I get other mechanical parts working. Off to the battery store.
Thanks Cat

Alot of parts stores have a free battery checkup for your battery.
Just bring in your battery to someone like Autozone, and they will check it. You may want to call first though, depending on what store you go to.
As for tires, are there any cracking around either the treads, or sidewalls?
Alot of tire companies change the tread designs on their tires, and even change the names abit, so it's possible that you can no longer get the same matching tires.

Hope this helps,

George
