chevys use of the iroc title?
hey i have a 91 camaro z28, but my question is, back in the day when chevy first introduced the iroc-z camaro. where did they get the iroc name from? then why did they lose it and dodge got it for a short while before it disappeared? i am just hoping someone on here knows these answers, cause i dont know where else to find them thanks frosty

International Race of Champions
http://www.irocracing.com/
Started in 1973 / 1974 ? (mid year change?) with 911 Porsches
In 1974 Roger Penske built a bunch of Camaros for the race
I lived about 5 miles from his Chevrolet dealer on Telegraph Road in Southfield Michigan and remember all the "deals" avail for all the stock parts they removed from the cars
They used Camaros until Dodge bought the "right" to the title/name
Don't you remember those highly successful Dodge IROC's? :-)
LOL, no one else does either ...
1990 Camaro was the "last" IROC, also a half year production for Chevrolet as the 91 Camaro (and no IROC) was introdcued early in 90 as a 91 model. The IROC races for 90 used Dodges.
93 was the last year for the Dodge Daytona based cars, 94 - 95 used the Avenger
1996 they started using the Pontiac Trans Am

Yeah, pretty cool how they use a car, that no longer exists! You'd think SOMEBODY would have stepped up, with a current production vehicle, as the car choice.
I like how, when you go to the I.R.O.C. home page, the first pic up top, is of the 3rd gen Camaros! For history, you'd think they would have a collage of every body style used, throughout all the years.

Re: chevys use of the iroc title?
THe IROC camaro is by far the most recognizable for the series. If you say IROC to anyone who lived through the 80s they will say Camaro. The Daytona IROC I have only seen a few. I think the reason why there still using the Firebird is 1) its aerodynamic. 2) Nothing really works better for the series.
