Factory Undercoating

Did all third gens come from the factory with undercoating on them? If so where was it applied?

I would like to know more specifics on this. I have recently purchased an 85 IROC (Van Nuys Built) and I noticed that all underbody panels and engine bay is covered with that waxy sprayon material, this material is even on the inside of the front fenders too. Now, I noticed that the coating was sprayed on before it was assembled (after factory paing) due to the lack of overspray on other parts. Was this part of the BS1 option like my car had?? I would like to know before I go removing this stuff as I don't want to hurt the originality of my IROC.

Re: Factory Undercoating

I've got the same stuff on my 87 Trans Am. I'm not sure if it is worth removing. It's quite a huge undertaking, but for a clean looking engine compartment, it's got to go. Maybe emblem adhesive remover would do the trick.

Re: Factory Undercoating

I took some of it off my 87, it was in my engine bay, looked like crap... Prep-solv or lighter fluid can take it off... Mine was a light transparent yellowish color... If you have any decals that you want to preserve it will more than likely remove the ink from them so be careful. I had some black undercoating on my 89 vert that was applied by ASC, they covered the decals on the rear quarters and I wanted to verify that they were the original panels. What I ended up doing was taking a little acetone on a cotton swab and gently rub them until it was readable. I did not want to completely remove the decals ink, but it worked to where I could read the decal through the undercoating... It took me a little time but it was worth it.

Re: Factory Undercoating

The undercoat on my '83 Van Nuys built Z28 looks more like it was dealer applied.if i posted pics would there be a way to tell? She only has it around the insides of the wheel wells(and it's starting to come off showing the paint underneath). The only rust is surface on non painted surfaces. The tags are still on the springs but they are, infortunatly, non legible.

Re: Factory Undercoating

As I recall, most if not all undercoating was done by the new car dealership. When I bought my `75 GMC short bed 4x4, I was asked if I wanted the truck undercoated, they would do it at the dealership. That`s how it has worked for everybody I know that has bought a new car up to the mid-`90`s. Don`t know if they do it on new cars at the factory now or not.

Re: Factory Undercoating

I can't find any where in my original documentation that the car had been undercoated after or during factory build. like I mentioned, it seems that this coating was sprayed before all the components where installed especially in the engine compartment, nothing has overspray on it, unless they masked the heck out of everything I think it was sprayed on during the factory. I would sure like to get this resolved.

Re: Factory Undercoating

IIRC, they were dealer applied like mine. I have to say, it worked.

OK, I will have to go and remove this stuff, it sure was applied cleanly and evenly for being applied by the dealer.
