Ditch the Camaros, anything with a V6 is just a V6, you convert the engine to a V8 and it might help with the value but not an awful lot.
The Trans Am is a better car to start with by your description. Anything you can do to lower your work load is a step in the right direction. One thing to look at on ANY Firebird is the front fender just behind the headlight on the very top. When you open your hood typically on the Drivers side there is a crack that forms at the radiator support beam. The crack typically runs straight up from a factory weld spot about 1/2" back from the radiator support.
Buy the Trans Am, sell the Camaros, put the V8 into the Trans Am... Unless its a L69 car. then keep it all original.
