85 mph speedo in t/a??

hey i have a 1985 lb9 a4 trans am, it has an 85 mph speedometer, my father says in those days it wasn't uncommon for insurance purposes to have 85 mph speedo's, however i thought it should have the formy/t/a 140 mph speedo, the car is missing it's rpo sheet and was highly, crappily, modified, did they come this way??

i hope it is the correct cluster, that would mean the car has less then 50,000 miles!

Yes it came that way. How do you know it's less than 50k? The odo should only show five digits?

Re: 85 mph speedo in t/a??

i used to do body work, there's no sign the car has ever been painted other then the ground effects were painted to make the car look like a GTA, the paint is new looking and scratch free, and the car is rust free and nearly dent free, also the trans is nice and tight and the car is extremely clean, it looks like a 50 thousand mile car. so no i have no affirmitive proof but either the car is low mileage or was extremely well maintained.

Re: 85 mph speedo in t/a??

it's fine man, i think my dad actually said it was gov regulation, i just posted it wrong. My dad knows the craziest info about pre 80's vehicles, worked at a junkyard for 18 yrs in addition to being a teacher with a masters, he knows what fits what and how it comes off and goes on fastest, what's worth a penny, what breaks alot, the dude is an encyclopedia of backyard mechanica
