Rear end numbers?

Are the rear end housings on thirdgens, specificly 1989 models, stamped with the vin? Also are there any links to info on decoding the rear end codes?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Re: Rear end numbers?

Top of the right tube out by the backing plate. Two or three letter code nothing to do with the VIN. By the way this is Boomer off Nethirdgen.

Re: Rear end numbers?

The 10 bolt rear have the build plant/date,axle code, positraction code (if equipped). As Apache John stated there's none of the VIN on the axle though you can somewhat gather if it's original by build date (at least close). Now whether this code is still readable depends a lot on where the car spent her life. Also you have to take into account if the ring/pinion have been changed.

I believe the 9 bolts had a tag with this info but please correct me if I'm wrong. Also for the '84 up cars with the correct SPID you have the code and this link may be of help.

Re: Rear end numbers?

I have torn apart several cars and none of the axles had the VIN stamped on them... The only places that I have found VIN's is the Windshield, Engine has a partial as does the Transmission... There are some vins hidden in the car that I have never found on the chassis, but they are supposed to exist.

Many parts have a date stamp, but beyond that no VINS to my knowledge...
