88 Firebird - the only year of the ECM

Hi !

A friend of mine owns an 88 Firebird and he is interested in why GM uses the ECM (I think it is the #1228063) in this year only and no longer ?

Someone an idea ?

Re: 88 Firebird - the only year of the ECM

Which engine does he have? V6 or V8, LB9, or L98???

THe LO3 used the same ECM from 1988 - 1989 ( 1228063 )
The LB9 & then L98 used the same ECM from 1986 - 1989 ( 1227165 )
The LB8 (V6) used the same ECM from 1987 - 1989 ( 1227302 )

I want to think that GM went from 8 bit to 16 bit in 1986, and then in 1990 they upgraded again and started using a 32 bit ECM. That's what I seem to remember. You might look in some of the other forums to make sure on that.

Re: 88 Firebird - the only year of the ECM

I am Patrick´s friend. My engine is a L03. I´ve read, the 1228063-ECM only fits in the 88´Camaro and Firebird TBI. Can I also use another, newer ECM ? What´s the difference between the 1228063 ECM from 1988 and the newer 1228746 ECM for the 89-91´models ? Is the wiring harnes the same and just the ECM is different ?

Re: 88 Firebird - the only year of the ECM

Not really sure what the differences are. I would think that the pinouts are different for the 1990 - 1992 cars. You shoudl be able to actually put in a 90-92 type ECM but it will not be a direct plugin, you will probably have to change your plugs on the ECM. Beyond that I believe everything else is the same on the cars... I know TPI they changed some things...

Keep in mind that they used the same engine in V8 Chevy & GMC trucks the ECM may be the same. I see your on the other side of the pond, but you might consider contacting hawksthirdgenparts.com and see if they have an ECM for you.

According to the Parts and Illustration catalogs the 1988 & 1989 both used the same ECM.

You might try https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/dfi-ecm/ Its the DFI-ECM board.
