Found a l98 5.7 iroc z for $500 worth restoring?
Hey guys i found a 5.7 iroc z looks to be an 1988, it does not run and but all the fluids look good and trans fluid is nice and red and the oil looks fairly nice, the coil is apart on the car and removed like it had an ignition problem, the car is blue and is a t-top car he only wants $500 for it and its sitting by a junk yard so id hate to see it get crushed. Just thought id run it by all of yall on thirdgen to see what you think. Or if you have any suggestions as to what may be wrong with it..

5.7 and t-tops were only available in 87, if I recall correctly. Easy way to tell if it's a factory 5.7, 8th digit of the VIN will be "8". It's possible somebody replaced the block or engine.
To answer your question, it's worth $500 just to part out, but to restore it depends on what it needs done, is it going to be done yourself or hired out? Does it have a clear title? Are you restoring to keep the car or to resell? I know many people who have way more invested then they would ever sell it for. What is your budget? Is it going to be a stock restoration, or modified restoration?
On a car 20 years old you can expect just about everything rubber is shot, engine/trans/rear end need refreshing, paint/body work needs to be done, etc.
I would make a detailed list of everything that needs to be done, research parts/costs and see if it fits your budget/time frame or ability/desire.
In the end only you can answer your own question.

No you are slightly off the Irocs were produced with the 5.7 & T-tops through 89 or even 90 but none after that.

As for L98's
There are a ton of 1989's with T-tops, and quite a few in 1987, there are not as many in 1988, and non existent from 1990 - 1992 on the Camaros. Only the Firebird Formula got T-tops and a 350 in 1991 & 1992.
I would think $500 is not a bad buy however. Worse case scenario is you use the car for parts... any $500 parts car with a TPI is well worth it IMHO...

If you buy it and put it together, but it does not run, but it cranks and everything, check the fuse able links by the starter. I bought a car that did not run and the link had corroded so badly that there was no longer a connection...
