Re: vin number

Hint: DON'T post the last six numbers of your VIN. Its been posted somewhere (stickies maybe) that there have been problems with VINs being stolen if the whole thing is posted. Just thought I did give you that heads up since you are a new member.

Re: vin number

I edited out the complete VIN.

To answer your question, look for RPO code "Y84" on your SPID sheet. To find the sheet, open your center console lid, lift out the cassette holder (if equipped) and on the inside wall of the center console should be a SPID sheet with a lot of 3 character codes.

That is the definite way to tell the difference between a GTA and Trans AM - from the factory. You cannot tell by simply looking at the VIN itself, as the GTA and Trans AM shared the same VIN prefix. Only way to tell by the VIN is to have your local GM dealership check the VIN to decode it, or through a service that has access to the records. I don't think anyone here can, or does, check VINs for users so posting your VIN is not wise.

Re: vin number

Thanks for deleting the numbers, I didn't want to see new members become victim to some of the scams of the past.

Re: vin number

The 5th digit is a W so it is a real Trans Am. The VIN doesn't denote if the car is a regular Trans Am or Trans Am GTA. You need to look at the SPID label in the center console and see if it has the RPO code Y84 for the GTA option.

Question for you JT, did Pontiac recycle RPO codes? In my mind Y84 is the Recaro Special Edition Trans Am.

Re: vin number

Yes, they recycled RPO's

Typically they are similar in usage, but when you consider that they have 3 Letters or numbers and there are about 42,875 combination's available.

WS6 for example has stood for the performance Suspension, It started out as an RPO that included Posi, Disc brakes, Larger sway bars, Fast ratio steering etc, starting in 1985 the Posi & Disc brakes were dropped, and it ended up being a suspension only designation. I think in the 4th gens it ended up being more or less a Ram Air package as well...

Re: vin number

John,
thanks for the clarification. Now that I think about it I think Y84 was part of the Special Edition codes for the 76-81 TAs. And yes the WS6 did designate the Ram Air package for the 4th gen birds from 96 onwards.
