How to tell a v6 or v8

hey im looking at a either 91-92 firebird right now. the car only have a number on the for sale sign and no other info. I called but some lady answered and said she thought it had a v8 but it was her husbands car. I was wondering if theres any way to tell if its a 3.1 or 305 without popping the hood? thanks!

Get the vin# The 8th diget should be the engine code(if I remember correctly) For instance mine is code E = LO3TBI (305/small 8). You can look up the other codes....

Re: How to tell a v6 or v8

Check the VIN, like he says. 8th digit is the one you care about.

T = 140hp 3.1L MPFI V6
E = 170hp 5.0L TBI V8
F = 230hp 5.0L TPI V8
8 = 245hp 5.7L TPI V8
