Re: 82 firebird rearend

Changed the fluid in it lately?

Then now is a TERRIFIC time to take 10 minutes or so of your time and do that. While you're there, look at the gears and see. Most of them, the ring gear has the ratio stamped on the edge; it will look something like "41:11", which would be 3.73 (41/11 = 3.727272727...), or "42:13" which would be 3.23 (3.230769230769230769...). Or you could just break down and do actual work if you had to, and count the teeth. But that probably won't be necessary.

And while you're there, observe the carrier and see if it has posi, so your next post isn't "does a 82 TA CFI have posi?".

The transmission they put in the 82 cars was the 200C. It is a major-league pile of dung. It is weak, prone to tearing up, and hard to get to work right under the best of circumstances. Altogether NOT a good candidate for a swap, or even to get repaired and re-use, if it's broke already. Additionally, it's a different length from the ones in later cars, and uses a different crossmember and drive shaft; but people who want to put a Turbo 350 in their cars will pay GOOD MONEY for those parts. Everything BUT the transmission, in that setup, is valuable.

I concur, and agree whole heartedly. Went thru many of these in the 7 yrs I owned my '82 T/A. It may interest you that the same transmission was used in Chevettes. GM figured there was no difference in power between a 4 cylinder and an 8 cylinder motor, or weight difference between a 3400# T/A and a Chevette.

Re: 82 firebird rearend

Can we just put a stop to this entire process? I'm referring of course to "I just got this car and I want to use it as parts, is this part any good?". I'll break it down, just in case it's not already obvious. There's pretty much nothing on an 82 that you'd actually want to put on any F-body after about 84. All of the running gear got better as the years went on. Almost all of the interior and exterior changed. About the only car that an 82 would be a good parts car for, would be another 82.

Re: 82 firebird rearend

sofakingdom,I havn't even brought the car home yet,I paid half of it and pay the other half when I pick it up,The grass is high enuff if I wanted to I couldnt see the gears.I've just started into these third gens and trying to learn all I can about them without spending money first. The car was fixing to go to the crusher.400$ saved it from that fate. It's a black and gold trans am.with rear disk.has t tops and recaro seats.good lights alaround.don't know if the tranny would even work. It's sat over 6 years in a barn with 83000 on it.I'd hate for all these parts to go to waist.I get it home and I will put it up on the for sale post first, then the parts
