Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto
hey can someone help me fugure out what these numbers mean on that last pic?
Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto
The only difference between split rear/solid rear is the additional pivot for the split seats in the middle, and on early cars the addition of the passengers side latch for the seat back. Early solid rear seat back cars only have the latch on the drivers side.
There should be two rows of code. The first line tells you a few details about the engine and car it might have gone in. The second line is a partial VIN of the car it's from. You'll have to google the code to get a definition either way since there is no list here.
87-up heads with centerbolt valve covers won't leak oil as easily as earlier heads, but 82-86 heads are generally considered better for performance. On an otherwise stock 305 it probably won't matter much, as long as you're using HO heads. The original heads from your car would be better if they aren't warped.

Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto
those sites completely contadict the cast numbers... tryin to say its a 67 or 68 motor with a 3 speed manual but the cast numbers are saying 87-91
Re: 1985 Trans Am first resto
Sometimes casting numbers can be hard to read. Get yourself a wire bristle brush and a can of carburetor cleaner. Spray, scrub, spray, scrub, when it's really clean get yourself a nice bright light and try reading the numbers again.
