Returning to the 80s

I will be picking up my 1982 Trans Am next week. It is black and gold with t-tops and the fuel injected engine. 39k original miles and all original. I bought it out of state and will ship it home, I plan to detail and fix what ever it needs and and enjoy it to the max.

Anything I need to know or look for? Would it be safe to cut and buff paint that old? And what is not to love about the retro look of this car, I think its bad ***.

Re: Returning to the 80s

I have had an 82 TA for 22 years - glad I never got rid of it!
That original paint is probably lacquer. If it wasn't out in the elements it should buff up nice with a polishing compound. Just be careful you don't burn through the paint.

Re: Returning to the 80s

That is a great find especially if she is an original WS6 car (4 wheel disc are the most evident part). The fuel injected motor for '82 is the LU5 CFI 305 (trans is a TH200C 3 speed auto). CFI motors hate vacuum leaks. At the very least you'll want to replace all the vaccuum lines if they haven't been recently. I agree using the white polishing compound should do fine (I used this on my '83 Z28's original paint).

Re: Returning to the 80s

Thanks for the tips, I am sure I will have more questions when it arrives in a few weeks. And yes I got it in IA.

Just an FYI. An 82 TA is not a retro look. It wears it's factory look that is now 29 years old.
