Timing Question

Have a parts question. I'm looking at having to switch out the timing chain on my car, so here is the information for you:

Car - 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am (VIN: 1G2AW87H1CL537531)
Engine - 305 ci LG4 V-8 with 4-barrel carb
Suspension - WS6, Brakes - Front/Rear Disk
Wheels - 215/65R15 Turbo Cast Aluminum

I know that most people would just tell me to yank the 305 and drop in a 350, but I'm unemployed and searching for work so funds a little tight.

My question - I'd like to put in a set of gears instead of a chain. Is there a set of gears that is a direct bolt-in? My favorite site (RockAuto.com) has a couple listed. I just want to be sure it'll just bolt right on. Your thoughts and suggestions please.

Thank you.
Nathan

Re: Timing Question

There are several timing gear sets available on the market that will work. None is significantly less annoying than any of the others.

Re: Timing Question

Why do you want a gear drive?

Re: Timing Question

Gears will work however they cost and are noisy. I would go with a double roller.

Re: Timing Question

Good luck getting a gear drive to fit under the stock timing cover.

Unless you're one of those meat-heads that wants his timing set to whine like a blower, just get a Cloyes stock replacement style double roller, and call it a day.

Leave the noisy gear drives on the shelf for the guy with the air shocks and the bitchin' whip antennas on his El Camino.
