Ok, I checked....NOT an IROC

I looked up the VIN and checked the RPO codes and come to find out, my car is NOT an IROC as it was advertized. The guy plainly told me that the car was an IROC and I purchased it with the assumption that it was in fact an IROC! I am devastated! I don't know if there are any legal issues that I can take or what! I love my car, but knowing that it is not a true IRoc really bothers me.....am I being stupid?

Tell me why you think the car isn't an IROC-Z.

Re: Ok, I checked....NOT an IROC

Because it did not have the B74 option in the RPO codes. Also the VIN shows that the 8th letter is an E.
I downloaded the decoder and that is what it told me.

Re: Ok, I checked....NOT an IROC

B74?

You're looking for Z28.

Also, the crappy 305 TBI (E) code engine was the base IROC engine through 1989.

If yours is an '88 and has the "Z28" code in the SPID, then it's an IROC-Z.

I can send you the RPO code and you can check it to see if I may be over looking something. Can I have your email address?

You can post a pic of the SPID here. We'll all give it a good once over. A couple pics of the car would be good too.

Re: Ok, I checked....NOT an IROC

It's pretty simple--just look at the codes again, if Z28 is there, and the VIN matches that of your car, it's an IROC. If there's no Z28, there isn't--it's that simple.

Truth is though, even if it is, since it has the base engine, of which I presume not many were made since you so rarely see an E code IROC, it doesn't really matter--it won't be any faster than my RS with the same E code engine.

Re: Ok, I checked....NOT an IROC

So its not an IROC-Z. Just looks like a base camaro with a v8. In 1988 you could get base camaros with the gfx package.

Looks like this guy got away with throwing a IROC-Z hood on and tricking you into thinking it was an IROC-Z.

That really really sucks.

Thats to bad, how long ago did you buy it? You should have asked why he has RS tail lights on it.

I bought it just a little over a week ago. I am in contact with the guy trying to get this resolved. The car is really nice, and I like it. Maybe I should just keep the car and keep fixing it up. I dont know.

Re: Ok, I checked....NOT an IROC

If you paid a premium based on the IROC-Z name, work that out with the seller. The car is a sport coupe. In 1988, all Camaros had ground effects and came with the 5 spoke aluminum wheels as standard. The IROC-Z had the option to upgrade the rims to the IROC-Z wheel we are used to seeing, but your rim was standard on all Camaros in 1988. Somebody added the IROC-Z hood, fog light surround and aftermarket fog lights. If the steering wheel is still the original, it should have a square horn instead of a round one. Also, in 1988, there was a shorty spoiler on the sport coupe. I believe this car should have that also, RPO D81.

Looks like a previous owner tried making the car look like a Z28. Nothing wrong with that until they try to sell it as one, like this seller did. Legally, you can make him give you your money back because he misrepresented the item. If he knows the car isn't an IROC-Z, then it's fraud. If he's the original owner, he then KNOWS the details of this car! If you like the car, and he was unknowing of it's actual status, work a better deal with him and keep the car.

IROC hood? I have that hood on a 1986 Z28. Please be careful how you describe things. IROC's and Z28's share many of the same parts. I've seen tail lights and other bits and pieces for sale described as IROC parts when they are interchangable pieces. I would suspect that the seller is trying to get more $$$ deceiving the buyer that something is for IROC when it came on a Z as well.

Since the car in question is a 1988 model, the only hood of that style for 88 would be the IROC-Z hood. Granted the Z28 from 85-87 also used this hood, but the seller didn't try and sell the car as an 85-87 anything. In 1988, the only car to have that hood was the IROC-Z, so technically, this is an IROC-Z hood for this car.

Also, don't forget that the IROC-Z was an option package on the Z28, so all Z28 parts can be found on an IROC-Z. It doesn't work the other direction though as there are many IROC-Z specific items not available for the base Z28.

As mentioned, an 88 Z28 IS an IROC. I dont think describing it as an IROC hood is bad practice, especially considering that ti was introduced the same year as the IROC package and it left with the IROC package also (I know the 91-92's got the same hood, but they didnt get louvers). Only two years between 85 and 1990 was that hood available on anything other than an IROC.

Kind of like the "RS" tail lights. THose rear lights were Z28 tails long before they became base RS taillights. And RS'es got grid lights in 91 and 92 anyway.

And to the OP... I would go to the seller and ask to be reimbursed for his lack of integrity, otherwise go to small claims court. You should be able to see how many people have owned the car on carfax, if he's the original owner it's a lock. I still think you'd have a good case against him if he wasn't, though.

Just going to small claims may scare him into settling with you anyway, who knows. But I would inform the seller that what he did was illegal and go from there.

Regardless, the car looks to be in good shape, and even if it were an IROC, and IROC with the L03 is never going to be worth a ton of money. Just enjoy your clean ride and if you want to spice it up in the years to come do it with no hesitation.

You're gonna have to give us more to go on like the RPO codes which can be found on the underside of the center console lid.

There was no IROC-Z option for 1988-1990. All Z28s were packaged with the IROC-Z trim. So, if you have a 88-90 Z28, you have an IROC-Z.

Not necessarily. Post #21 shows no "IROC" hood and incorrect wheels. Just because it says Z28 behind the wheels doesn't mean it's an IROC. If it has the RPO then yes.

Re: Ok, I checked....NOT an IROC

I never said anything about the car being a Z28 because it has emblems on it. I said that all 1988 Z28s are IROC-Zs. More than likely, his car is an 88 Sport Coupe also, but at this point, he would need to determine what the car is. He said it was a Z28, so I said it was an IROC-Z. He was asking how to determine if it was an IROC-Z or just a Z28. In 88, they are one in the same.

Actually, in '88 it would say "IROC-Z" behind the front wheels.......
