The GM Heritage Center website has vehicle information kits you can view online ( Adobe / PDF ) with the Motor Vehicle Manufactur Association specs including what drivetrain combinations got E.P.A. certified for production. I've caught a few errors, because not everything that got approved got produced, but still an excellent resource for researching your answers.

Re: L69 IROC's

I have a 83 L69/5spd/3.73/posi. It's a basket case right now, but I'm slowly working on it. I have swapped the 3.73 for a 3.42 9 bolt. I think it is pretty cool, it has nothing on it. It didn't even come with tilt. LOL

Re: L69 IROC's

Oh so you're THAT guy eh??

The one that thinks he has a 84 car that left the factory with a rear end that DIDN'T EXIST until a later year?

Sorry, I didn't pay the least attention to the user ID. Maybe I should, next time I see this fantasy, and ignore it and let it die, as it needs to.

Eight years is NOTHING. Eight years means you got it in about 2005; it was already only 4 years short of being AN ANTIQUE (in most states anyway). WHO KNOWS what that car has been through. Although I (and everybody else that is familiar with these cars) can tell you at least ONE thing it's been through: it's had a later model rear axle swapped into it.

The build sheet and all the rest of that doesn't tell you anything about "9-bolt".

The facts remain, YOU DON'T HAVE WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO CONVINCE YOURSELF YOU HAVE. It's that simple.

I have "forgot" NOTHING.

It's really unfortunate that you think you have persist in this fantasy, IN PUBLIC no less; and be rude to me all at the same time. Doesn't do the site as a whole any good at all to have this sort of thing rubbed in everybody's face. There's certainly no point in you coming along and trashing somebody else's post about some completely unrelated subject with this ... stuff.

"It's better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt". Don't forget that. Have a nice day!

Re: L69 IROC's

Yes I'm well aware of the 3.73 gears in L69 cars.

I HAVE ONE sitting in my driveway. Except it's a 83 and has a 10-bolt. In that year, 3.73 was STANDARD with the L69, they hadn't DOWNGRADED the L69 package to allow 3.42 yet, like they did for 84.

3.73 is a 10-bolt ratio. It was NEVER available from the factory in a 9-bolt. The similar corresponding 9-bolt ratio was 3.70, and was AFAIK only available in 85 FIREBIRDS with the L69. In the 9-bolt, 3.73 was only available in the aftermarket.

You DON'T have a 84 car that came with a 9-bolt. Disabuse yourself of that fantasy. Don't TROLL UP this gentleman's post about IROCs with your delusion, especially since your car isn't an IROC (although we do see posts around here about "84 IROC" once in a while), it's rude to him. I don't care about you being rude to me; I'm used to people who I break the news to that they're WRONG about something, getting all bowed up and sand in their .... self ... over it, doesn't bother me in the least. But a bunch of this arguing and name-calling over something this trivial is unwelcome around here, thrown into a post it doesn't even concern in the first place. ESPECIALLY since you have a REAR AXLE SWAP and apparently haven't pulled the cover off your rear (axle) and looked at the gears to see what they REALLY are. Might be 3.70, might even be 3.73, might not; who knows until YOU LOOK.

Go look. Get the production date off of your SWAPPED rear end and/or any of the parts in it. PROVE that you have the only 84 car with a 9-bolt that was ever made instead of ranting on me with a bunch of potty-mouth.

Re: L69 IROC's

sonjaab: The very document you attached shows the gear as a 7.5 gear.....

Page 75 & 76 of the PDF document you linked to also details the Ring Gear OD as 7.5.

http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/docs/gm-heritage-archive/vehicle-information-kits/Camaro/1984-Chevrolet-Camaro.pdf

Although 3.70 was a factory Stock 9-bolt gear it's not very common, & there wasn't a 3.73 9-Bolt. There was said to be a POSI shortage in 84 and MANY cars got a peg-leg rear end as a result. They didn't use 9-bolts to make up for the shortage,... they installed open carriers instead. ( maybe your car was "recalled" for a missing POSI after delivery and they just put a whoel new rear in - Who knows.) Fact remains, either you missed a bolt on the cover when counting, or you mis-calculated your rear gear ratio.

Open your dif and post what you find.

P.S. We are ALL wrong sometimes !!

Yes, you'll succeed in that if you keep acting like you are.

Just calm down, smoove out there homes, and realize that you're trying to claim that your 84 car "came with" a rear end that is well and widely known not to have been available until after that. You're on the HISTORY board, no sense in making yourself look like an idiot with stuff like that.

The space aliens did NOT decide that they were bored one night, break into the assembly plant after everybody had gone home, sneak their time-warp machine in the back door, and install a "feature from the future" in just that ONE car, KNOWING that you'd be the one to come along 25 yrs later and get a fantasy about having the only one that exists. Those aliens are pretty cool d00ds, but, .... that's more than can be expected from them.

See my signature for help understanding the situation. When attempting to figure out what events happened that led up to some observed condition, apply it. It works.

Your car is a 84.
All 84 cars came with 10-bolts.
=> Your car came with a 10-bolt.

Not too tough, eh??

Your car is a 84.
The 9-bolt wasn't available in ANY cars until 85, and not in ANY Camaro until 87 (I think... mighta been 88, I'll let somebody that knows that fact straighten me out if I'm wrong, because I don't have a problem admitting when I'm wrong).
=> Your car didn't come with a 9-bolt.

Also not too tough, eh?

Your car is a 84.
Your car has a 85-up rear axle in it.
=> Your car's axle has been swapped.

Any tougher? I don't think so.

Don't take it personal. It's just facts and logic, no personal attacks or any of the rest of your impolite behavior is really going to change any of it. Instead, take the high road; live and learn.

This has already been addressed on the first page with the list of names of owners. Whatever info they wanted to present is what I tried to put up there (and updated your information).

sofakingdom / sonjaab
Easy fellas - the point of this thread was to find out who had a factory L69 IROC which then morphed into any L69 be it T/A, Z28, or IROC from the thirdgen F-body platform. Thunderdome it out with each other in PM's please - not trying to be mean or disrespectful to either of you, but i didn't intend on this thread becoming a battlefield.

Haven't checked back on this page in a while and apparently chaos exploded. Bump for those who have an L69 and may not have seen this.

jraider66 - how did things turn out?
83Z28/L69 - added you to the list on page one. no worries about the basket case... mine is too.

Re: L69 IROC's

Here's another L69 you can add to the list, Da Spudro. I was the original owner of a 1983 Z28 HO, 5-speed, black exterior, charcoal interior, red exterior stripes and badges, T-Tops. I had it until the spring of 1986, at which time it was stolen and never recovered, so it's probably been dead and buried since then. But I've always wondered...

It's interesting to think it's still out there somewhere, posing as a questionably-documented 1982-1984 Camaro for some unwitting person who thinks he has a rare and unique factory anomaly. Maybe it was re-titled as my very similar 1982 Z28 that I sold when I ordered my 1983(the '82 was totaled while in the possession of it's new owner, yet it's VIN shows it reappeared shortly after my 1983 was stolen). Or maybe the "owner" IS fully aware of the history of the stolen car. He might even be a member here on TGO, who, if he saw this, would no doubt stand right up and say, "hey, I possess a stolen car; it might be yours." LOL

The few changes I'd made to my car before it disappeared were Bilstein shocks, a factory EQ/Cassette stereo, deleted body stripes, and probably one of the most unique changes was a 140 mph "Z28" speedometer.

Just to confirm some of the factory info, much of which has been debated in this thread: the VIN for the L69 in 1983 was 7(G for 1984+), only available with 3.73 non-posi in 1983(posi came in 1984), only available with a 5-speed in 1983(auto came in 1984).

Re: L69 IROC's

Yea, Shes from the old norwood plant. Its got tan interior. clocked at 56000 miles. still got the 85 alpine cassette player in it lol. 85mph speedometer. As for this car. It sat for a long time. So i went through with rebuilding the engine (New rings, bearings, pistons, valve seals, valve guides etc.etc), stuck with the same e4me roch carb. Put in new fuel tank, pump. Dropped in a new clutch. i mean. idk. we all go through this sht with older cars. so its nothing new. What i'm wondering is how many are left of this HO model from 85.

Re: L69 IROC's

At San Fernando Valley junkyard yesterday I found one of the few 1985 Trans Am HO cars: white/T-tops/L69/T5/3.70 posi-disc 9-bolt, with the standard flat rear spoiler. The dual-snorkel intake was gone(yes, 1985 and 1986 L69 TAs did, indeed, have the dual-snorkel air cleaner), but the engine and the rearend were still there. I photographed the VIN on the dash. The SP numbers were covered by debris underneath the dash pad, but the first 11 digits confirmed it's a 1985 Trans Am L69. So even though it's "dead," sadly, it is, at least, accounted-for, for those who might be keeping such records.

Similarly, about 8 years ago at this same junkyard I removed the 3.70 posi-disc 9-bolt from another dead-and-buried 1985 Trans Am L69 car. I didn't think to take a pic of its VIN, but that accounts for another of the few 1985 Trans Am HO cars that, otherwise, might never have been accounted-for.

Mine is a 83 Z28, Van Nuys car. 5-spd of course since they hadn't allowed the downgrade to the automatic yet. Pretty much used up now I'm afraid. Has well over 300k miles on the chassis, alot of em with a 400 in it. Still has the SMC hood. Has a T-56 and a 90-something 3rd gen rear in it with PBR brakes and Eaton posi, with the stock gears though. (3.73) Didn't come with either posi or discs. SFCs, LCARBs, Lakewood LCAs, Spohn TA, C5 wheels. Still has the OE air cleaner and cooling system. 4th gen seats. It was silver/silver/grey velour originally. Has basically everything from that year; PS/M/DL/W/HR, T-tops, cargo lift cover, window-shade tonneau cover. Nice car. But, all the spot welds underneath it are cracked, and it's basically undriveable any more. Needs work.

I've had ALOT of fun in that car over all these years.

Re: L69 IROC's

Mines an 84 T/A, 5 speed, only options it DOESN'T have for a non SE/Recaro T/A : leather seats, electric seats, power hatch, locking fuel door, map lights on the roof.
All matching numbers with a 3.73 10 bolt.

I'm in the process of finishing the restoration right now, still quite a bit of work though. Got it for 600€, a steal here in Europe, back in march 2009. She ran and drove fine, which was quite impressive for this price, but the radiator was in its last breath, the alternator was dying. Later the same year I was given a whole bunch of original parts from a fellow who built the L69 from his Z28. I got the exhaust manifolds, Y-pipe, distributor, AIR pump, plenty of small bits that were missing.

I know another L69 5 speed in France, Canadian model in Savoy. It was about to be parted out and I convinced the owner his car had some value and was not as bad as he thought. His only comparison point is his mint 85 Firebird...he did keep all the front panels unfortunately as his car got hit in the front.
So I'm trying to gather money to eventually buy it. It's a plain jane car, standard interior, no A/C, I haven't seen the SPId yet but I'd be curious to see it.

But, all the spot welds underneath it are cracked, and it's basically undriveable any more. Needs work.

I've had ALOT of fun in that car over all these years.
What a feel good story. Carefully choose new car with the right equipment. Upgrade weaknesses and repair worn items. Put an average of 10k hard miles on it every year for 30 years until the BODY is worn out.

Score yourself an A+ for minimizing loss on depreciating asset.

Re: L69 IROC's

I am interested in learning more about L69 1985 Irocs. Curious as to what people think about their collector potential versus later model TPI Irocs. Let me know your thoughts

Wonder how many L69 CONVERTIBLES were produced. Though I know several companies were doing convertible conversions back then. This is a 1983 with the VIN code of "7" (which should be correct for the 1983 L69 from what I have read here) despite what the listing says.

Re: L69 IROC's

Hey guys. As best as myself and my brother can tell I have a 1986 L69. It's not in mint condition, but it's not all that bad either. Couple small dents by the tail lights is about the only real body issues, and the interior is mainly needing a major detail but appears to be in good shape.
I would like to know how I can verify for SURE what Ive got here, and ball park value of this car if it is in fact a 1986 L69.
thanks for any help on this guys.

Using a (likely very generous) estimated survival rate of 10%, that leaves us with about 250 85-86 L69s. And don't forget that not all of them will be IROCs. Some will be Z28s. Many others will be clapped out and modified beyond virtual recognition. I think your odds of getting struck by lightning are better than finding another nice example on here!

FWIW, it would be cool if you could post pics of this rare vehicle in this thread for historic purposes.

Do you think this is a game? You can't just come in here, and say "I just bought a thirdgen" and NOT post pics.

We really don't want to see your car.... We NEED to see your car.

Tough question and maybe I'll let the other guys chime in. It's cool that you have an '85 IROC, HO, in blue with an LS interior.

But restoring it will suck up a ton of cash. The interior alone will take thousands of dollars to restore and you'll still never find the correct blue bolster fabric for those seats, (as me how I know).

Cool car, but not a project for the faint of heart.
