The sound of the 1982 LU-5

Got my original 42,000 mile LU-5 out today and went for a spin for the first time this year. After growing accustomed to the LG-4 and LB-9 over the bulk of the summer by comparison there is a very distinctive sound from the LU-5 motor. It sounds great lopes at idle very much like an old school muscle car- yet when it is go time you find out quick it only has 165HP under the hood.

Anyone do any camshaft research on these engines?.

I thought the cam was the same as the L69.

if it is a Vacuum leak it has had it since 1986 LOL. I like it.

As a cruiser LU-5 is perhaps the most underappreciated of the early 305's.

A good running LU5 is a nice cruiser and the exhaust has a nice sound to it, too. The hood flaps are pretty cool as well.

Re: The sound of the 1982 LU-5

My old 82 Pace Car LU5 had a double muffler setup on it and sounded great. I had issues with the CFI and being underwhelmed with the power I pulled it and dropped in a 350 with 882 heads and 276 cam IIRC along with a built TH350. Sure it was faster but the CFI setup was neat and today now I'm older and appreciate well kept stock cars I would leave it alone if I had another.

As crappy performance wise as cfi is... it sounds great... and it's because of mixture imbalance between cylinders.

Re: The sound of the 1982 LU-5

CFI has that distinctive whistle at low RPM,small throttle opening cruise also As I recall,LU5 does not use the L83,L69,85 LB9, ETC.cam-it used the same cam as the lower power '86 LB9.

1982 -'83 F-Body LU5: GM PN: 14088839 Hyd. Flat Tappet - Duration @ .050": 194/202 - Max Lift .383/.401 - 112 - Idle: 650 rpm
1982 -'86 F-Body LG4: GM PN: 14088841 Hyd. Flat Tappet - Duration @ .050": 178/194 - Max Lift .350/.385 - 108 - Idle: 650 rpm "Peanut Cam"
1983 -'86 F-Body L69: GM PN: 14088843 Hyd. Flat Tappet - Duration @ .050": 202/206 - Max Lift: .403/.415 - 115 - Idle: 650 rpm

As we can see, it is neither the LG4 "Peanut Cam" nor the L69 cam.

Re: The sound of the 1982 LU-5

Bout as bad as the "peanut cam" I fought it and scratched my head over my CFI car for one whole month before yanking it and the TH200 and in with the 350/TH350 combo. The CFI setup did look cool though.

Yeah, it does make it sound like it has a larger, lopier cam. With a 3" exhaust and 2OTL, mine sounded like a 400 hp smallblock.
