Correct, fans fans play a big roll in keeping these cool. A quick track trick is grounding the wire at 2nd fan switch in the pass head or even putting it on a ground side switch.

yeah i grounded the head side on a switch to keep it running while car was off to cool rad. Icing the tpi plenum was almost always a 0.1 et improvement for me. It heat soaks bad. Even my stealth ram did good with iced plenum

LOL nothing screams the 90s like having your hood up in the staging lanes with a bag of ice on a TPI or LT1 intake manifold.

Oh the memories.. lol tools, jack, tires and cooler full of bagged ice and dry towels to put under the ice bags on intake so water wouldn't run onto the track..

I used to really look forward getting GM High Tech Performance back in the day until they got bought out and replaced by I think Chevy High Performance. High Performance Pontiac was good too.

Re: Formula 350 drag test (vintage)
That car in the first article is a literal clone of my 88 Formula. Although I never read that article until today, I had similar results in 2006-07 when I first bought the car (w 50k miles for like 3500 bucks). Once it was tuned up it ran consistent 14.70's stock and would get worse the hotter the engine got. I installed a SLP cold air, 180 thermostat and a edelbrock aftercat and the car would go 14.20's-30's all the time. Similarly I found heat to be the biggest issue, I removed the scoop block off plate and would push the car through staging with the hood up. Then I stored the car for like 10 years. Me and a buddy got it out of storage last year, tuned it up again and installed some dyno dons before we drove it from Cincinnati to St Lois for Roadkill Zip tie drags. It went 13.90's/14.00's picking up 4 mph in like 95 degree heat running at 210 degrees. I could literally bare hand grab the header before I could touch the intake runners, TPI is a heat sink.
I never bumped the timing beyond the stock 6 degrees, but this car has always dead hooked on street tires. Ive broke the trans mount twice in it.

Re: Formula 350 drag test (vintage)
Remember being at the track one time with this old guy that ran an exhaust shop locally. This would have been around 1996 I’m guessing. He had purchased a new 93 Ford Lightning a few years prior and had a Paxton supercharger installed. Truck would run solid low 14’s on street tires. He saw me icing my intake and asked what I was doing. Long story short, sends his grandson to concessions to get a back of ice. Cools it down, makes a 13.80 pass next run and something in the engine lets go.
