General Questions about my 89 GTA
General Questions about my 89 GTA
Hello all, first post here...
I just got an 89 GTA recently and wasn't sure about the authenticity of it. I ordered the information from GMMediaArchive and the only thing on the document sent was Y84, Y5F, and L98. My question is that it has a 5 speed in it, but I read that not 5.7s came with a 5 speed. Did the owner swap it? It looks all original and I was told by the owner it was, there also appears to be a hydraulic master cylinder for the clutch, I could be wrong. Any information is appreciated, I am fairly new to classics and would like to learn more.
Thank.

There was no L98 with the manual transmission, from the factory, for the general public during the ThirdGen (1982-1992) production. So, if you have the L98 and a manual transmission, it's not factory.
Look at the inside wall of the center console for the SPID sticker. It will have the VIN and several 3-character codes that each define the options on the car as left from the factory. Look for MX0. MX0 is the automatic transmission. However, since the transmission was likely swapped from auto to manual, the console may not have the SPID sticker or it may not be original to the car.
Post the GM Archive invoice. I thought the transmission was listed (for example: MX0 for auto and MM5 for 5-speed manual). Then again, the invoice does not list every single RPO code so that it's missing does not imply significance.

This car?

It's not factory - from the aftermarket hood to the "engine built over 400hP" 355 engine. That alone makes it pretty likely the transmission is not original.

Yeah that's it, didn't buy the motor, I have a 350 from a corvette I want to build... I guess I am going to have to lift it up and see what transmission is inside then. Regardless, no way there is an original 5 speed is what I am understanding

It is a Borg-Warner T56 6-Speed Transmission for Gen-1 and Gen-2 SBCs.
Also the Electrical-Connector can clearly be seen hanging down, for the original THM700-R4 Torque-Converter Lock-Up Circuit.

Yup, it's the LT1 T-56 from a 94 - 97 F body. The version with the pull clutch.
Doesn't look like it has ever worked in that car yet. I see no evidence of hydraulics on the firewall.
