Check out this link:

AutoTrader.com: 1986 Pontiac Trans Am GTA

What is it? I thought GTA's didn't arrive on the scene until '87. And what's with the fender and quarterpanel? I haven't seen anything like this in any of the research I've done about Trans Ams. I'm thinking this must be some custom thing.

Comments?

It is no GTA. You can tell by the VIN. Typical used car dealer sales . You can find info on Tojans by doing a search. You are right about the GTA's in '87 and Tojans being custom jobs. Another pic.

I did a search on the web and found photos of a few others... Yes, they're certainly, umm, different. I can't decide if I like them or hate them. Thanks for the info.

I figured the stuff about it being a GTA was a load of , but I wanted to be sure before I made an *** of myself.

Don't hold back guys... um different doesn't come close... they're hideously ugly. Like most every other aftermarket modification the Tojan conversion just makes the car look tacky. Somehow I have a feeling that in 10 years or so the ram air hoods and 4th gen spoilers and such that are all the rage now will be in the same book with this crap from the 80's.

OK... the Tojan cars were conversions made my Knudsen Automotive, in Ohio I believe. Most of these conversions were done on new cars, how ever they would do them on a used one as well. The conversion consists of new fiberglass hood, fenders, 1/4 panels, front and rear clip. Also, wood grain dash's, as well as new new seats were added as well. I have also heard that the frame was lengthened by approx. 2" too. It wasnt a cheap conversion, at around 10k. There were also a few convertibles made as well.

Hope this helps!

<BR>I find it hard to believe that you would place that car and a hood and a wing in the same catagory. Yes that car is a bad example of what could of been. But to compare it to fourth gen styling ques is just wrong. Maybe in twenty years a perfectly stock third gen will cause a stir but for now I'll take all the looks i can get from my fourth gen wing.

My comparison of the Tojan and other 80's addons (wide body kits, huge spoilers, big block and turbo hoods) to the current craze of 4th gen spoilers and ram air hoods comes from the fact that both items are there solely to gain attention. What will gain attention is subjective to current styling, etc. While the Tojan and most of the stuff ASCD offers may have been capable of a "whoa cool" in the 80's, now they get "good ***, what happened to that thing". Much in the same way that in a few years people will look at a Firebird with a 4th gen spoiler and ram air II hood and wonder how it would look if the previous owner had preserved the car instead of changing it just to be different.

Just an alternate opinion, you dont have to agree with me.
