Here's another what's it worth

I know I guy who has a 1987 IROC convertible. The Car has 55k on it. option level #3, dark red with grey cloth. He fried the 305 four barrel, and stuck a 350 (GM crate motor) in it. It's sitting in his driveway rotting away.

I'd like to get this car away from him, because he doesn't care about it.

The question is:

How much would you pay for it?

Considering you used the word "Rotting", I wouldn't give more than $4K at the most What condition is it really in, like hows all of the plastic and the top and does it have any rust since it's just "Rotting" away?

The top is ripped, the interior smells like mold. The body is in good shape, no rust, dents etc. the problem is he thinks it's worth BIG bucks, I need to convince him otherwise. I can save this car, he doesn't care about it, it sat outside all winter.

But like everyone I don't want to pay too much.

To show him the true value, determine what it needs and price it out. Deduct that from what the market is showing for one in good shape. The entire interior can cost upwards of $1k. Does it need tires, cuz they aren't cheap. Does it need engine work from just sitting and maybe not being properly tuned after the swap? The ragtop itself will bring in top $$. Just talking appearance items, you could be looking at $2500 without paint. Does it need that too? The price will depend on the actual condition of the car, not what we say it's worth.
