Euphamisim or is there a difference? I remember reading something about shakers having a trap door that opens w/the throttle, but i'm not sure.

Well, there is a difference, but it's in form, not function. Both shakers and cowl induction units utilized opening flaps to increase cold air intake. A functional cowl induction system got it's name from the 60's and 70's era f-bodies (mainly late 70's Camaros) that had a cold air induction system operating in the 'cowl', or scoop, of the hood. Sometimes it faced the windshield (like on my '80 Z28), sometimes it faced forward (like the late 70's Z28's). A 'shaker' scoop was pretty much only found on the 70's era Trans Ams (think of Smokey and the Bandit)... it got it's name from the fact that it was mounted to the engine's air cleaner housing, and seperate from the hood... this means it would 'shake' with the engine. Shaker scoops were only functional from the factory until '74 or '75... after that they were purely cosmetic. It didn't take much work to make the shaker scoop on my '79 T/A functional, and many other folks have done the same. Hope this helps!
