Mine is stuck dead in the middle, I have a new pump, hanger and sending unit...think the gauge needs replacing.

Be advised 82-89 aren't all the same. Early cars have straight tapered needles, later they step down near the point. 86 would probably have the stepped needles. FWIW.

 

One way to test the Gauge, pull it out and put voltage across the contacts. (9 Volt battery would do). How I determined my float was stuck.
If you still want a replacement I have one sitting from an '89. I'll just round shipping cost if you want it.

 

Thank you both for the info, I am going to pull the gauge this week and test it...it drops to E only sometimes but never above half a tank and most times it sits right there...
