Anyone know what year they switched from cable to electronic speedos in Canadian Firebirds? I need to find a new guage set (metric) with a cable speedo to fit a 1986 dash.

 

I bought a speedometer for my 86 IROC from a guy in AZ. It has kilometers marked on it although miles per hour is more predominant.
there are gauges on e-bay all the time for 3rd gens.

 

He wants the one that is predominantly KMh though. Not sure for Canada, but I believe 84 was the last year for Mechanical speedos in the US.

 

1985 was the last year for mechanical speedos in birds! If your car is indeed a 86 it will be electric. I actually have one here I dont need from a 1986 trans am , has a 180 cluster , full gauges set ,etc. I'll let it go for $25cdn.

 

Thanks for the offer but must say no. I have an 84 Trans Am that the previous owner put an 86 interior in. I guess he left the original gauges because it is definitely a cable speedo. Apparently I have a very narrow selection of cars I can try to get a gauge set from.

 

Why not get a electric VSS from another firebird? Its pretty easy to do and you will have more gauge selections and of coarse the brighter backlit feature. This mod also makes the 4thgen dash swap that much more reachable.
