left vent

I wasn't sure where exactly to ask this. But its in the interior so I guess this is as good a place as any. I just recently bought an 88 camaro sport coupe and directly under the steering wheel is a piece of plastic labeled "left vent" thatcan be pulled out or pushed in. I'm kinda new to these cars, so I was just wondering what exactly it does. Thanks in advance.

On cars without A/C it opens and closes the under-dash vent on the drivers side. There should also be one that says "right vent" that does the same for the passenger side.
