Black colored (airbag) steering wheels that will fit my 1982
My stock steering wheel is starting the cracking process. So time to put something nicer in it. Please don't bring up aftermarket steering wheels. I want a nice leather wrapped GM air bag wheel. for the fact I want to make it functional as well!
I like the 97 up Camaro wheels however don't like the fact the airbag has camaro in it. Did firebirds of the same year have Black steering wheels? .... how about a vette air bag wheel or other GM cars. Suppose I could go as new as 2007 as long as the 1990 electronics can work with that new of a airbag ..... Post some pictures of Black GM air bag wheels. If you have them
I have a 1989 column in my car so another question is will a airbag wheel mount to it? ..... Or would I need a 1990 up column so I would have the internal wiring and whatever for the air bag to work. Electrically speaking whats in a air bag steering column to make the airbag work that a non airbag column doesn't have? And can the 1990up stuff be put in the 1989 column.
This post is about column related questions about mounting the airbag wheel and whats in the column itself to make the airbag system work. As well as specifically black wheels that will look good in the car ......

It's been awhile - but all I remember different in the column itself is the yellow wire and connector for the airbag - you'd have to fish a wire up through the column for it (coathanger would work). The rest of the airbag stuff is all inside the wheel itself (as far as the wheel goes - the sensors and other stuff are under the dash, under the console, in the bumpers, etc.
There should be bird airbags out there in black from 1993 and up, but I don't know for sure. Alot of GM cars from similar years would have same wheel/airbag - I know my wife's 1995 Lumina minivan has the same airbag wheel as a 1993-1997 camaro - but it says "Lumina" on it. Maybe look at Pontiac cars (Sunfires, Le Mans, Bonnevilles, Grand Ams, Grand Prixs, etc.) in the latest models you can see up to 2002 (I would think they'd mostly be the same) and see what they have for "writing" on the bags, then hit the boneyard to find black specifically.

Any 3rd gen and a vast majority of other GM steeringwheels will bolt up fine to your 89 column
As for the bag, youll most likely just have a soft pillow to slap your face into vs the old horn button. Wiring up the half dozen sensors will be a feat, let alone making sure they work

I probably should have mentioned this. My car has ALL 1990 electronics in it throughout the car, so making the airbag functional is a matter of just bolting the wheel on and plugging in the impact sensors. It even has a instrument cluster with the "infl rest" light. Sorry should have been clear on this so people didn't have to type all thats involved in making it work.
This is why I brought up replacing the slowly but surely wearing out stock steering wheel with a airbag wheel since I can make it functional as well.
I am wondering though if these "camaro" "lumina" script could be filled then simply dye the airbag. As for a firebird wheel I have never seen one without the radio controls was this a standard feature with 4th gen firebirds.
Another question that might be of concern is did the impact sensors change throughout the years and would I have to upgrade to newer one when installing a say 2000 and up steering wheel. Another is the so called "DERM"
As for the column I have the wiring that goes to the column itself. is there anything special inside a airbag column. Like how is contact made from the airbag to the main wiring since the wheel turns or does wiring just run up the column and plug directly into the airbag module.
Anyone have a parts breakdown picture of a airbag column to see whats in there ???????

Why would you want to put an airbag in it if you don't have to? They look ugly. If you insist on putting on in though, 03-06 Tahoe/Yukon leather wrapped wheels look really nice but they have the Chevy logo on them. You probably won't have much luck finding a wheel that doesn't have some sort of logo on it. Just go pick up a nice Grant steering wheel, I took the ugly airbag out of my 91 and put a Grant wheel in and never looked back.
