1. What's your question.
2. Step away from the car and pay a professional before you damage it. Randomly applying 12V to wires that you don't know what they do is... well...

Re: purple wire
I believe you just found your remote wire from the ignition lock solenoid that goes down to your starter. The purple wire when energized, like turning the key in the ignition to crank the engine, pulls power from the starter solenoid over to the starter motor, letting the car fire up. For whatever reason, this wire is cut on your car. As previously suggested, pay a professional to look at this and fix the problem. Nothing on a car can be more dangerous than faulty or shade-tree wiring. Better safe than sorry. Thread Starter

Re: purple wire
If the previous owner installed the starter button it was most likely because of a bad ignition switch, park/neutral switch, or clutch engage switch. All of them are fairly easy to replace by a good mechanic. Most people use those starter buttons because they were to lazy to fix it the proper way.

Re: purple wire
i agree
something failed previosuly and someone quick "fixed" it
the lazy unsafe way
the purple would be either solenoid or neutral safety switch wire
good luck

Re: purple wire
you do not need a mechanic to fix this problem. you can do it yourself if you are safe. in other words DON"T APPLY 12V TO THINGS RANDOMLY.
now lets solve this.
1st unplug your negative battery terminal. and splice the purple wire back together, permanently (use a but connector and tape wrap or solder)
2nd is your car auto or manual?
MANUAL - go to GM, napa wherever and get a "clutch safety switch" and replace the one on your pedal now. looking at the switch you will be able to tell how it comes out.
AUTO - convert to manual.
or replace the "neutral safety switch" on your shifter in the center console. it is a combined unit and will also replace your reverse lights switch as well.
does it work when you turn the key? if yes YAY. if not read on.
3rd. look at the bottom of your steering column under the dash. see those two bolts holding it up, now you see those wires going into that black box with the rod coming out of it? no? turn the key.. see it now? that is your ignition switch. you thought you would have to take the column apart huh? not so. check to ensure that non of the connections are cut for that push button starter switch, if any wires are cut repair them. if it still will not start read on.
look at the bottom of your steering column. see those two big bolts holding it to the dash? remove those and allow the steering column to hang down. you may have to remove some under dash plastic for this, but it's not too bad. unscrew that and remove it. now operate it by hand, does the car start? if so it just needs to be re-aligned, put it back on and position it so that the car is still "off" with the key out, but can start with the key all the way to "start". if it will not work replace that box. it is called an "ignition switch" and should be available from GM or a parts store.
i have attached pictures of the boxes location for easy reference. the switch is not present, so you will have to use your imagination.
