check the metal spring clips on both sides of the button they need to both be there and bent outward slightly
also make sure they go down into the slots correctly, if they dont then it wil bend the ends of the clips and they will miss the slots and not keep the button down

Hey, thanks for this. In my '82 TA the shifter button does the same thing and wasn't sure how it actually stayed in place. Didn't think to bend the metal tabs outward a little bit. I just thought it kind of "floated" in the ****.
