camaro speedometer in a trans am?

currently parting out some of my interior from my 85 z28, and i got a guy with an 83 trans am interested in my 145 mph speedometer. i know the dashes between the two are pretty different, but, can you just take the speedometer out of the cluster housing from the camaro and put it into the the trans am housing? i dont know if they are the same size or if it would work, so if anyone has any input lemme know. thanks

I'm 99% sure they're different sizes and won't swap.

Respectfully, that usually means one does not know.
Has any one out there tried this swap before?? I'm almost ready to get one
of the Camaro 145's just to see if physically I can make it work. The Camaro 145 I've got my eye on ,..."This Speedometer is driven from the speedometer cable. It has an electronic speed sensor to plug into the vehicle computer if needed."...

SNAP!!! I've got a instrument cluster from a 87 Comaro (85mph though)
I'll will dig it out and see iffin the speedo will fit in one of these 84 T/A clusters!! Close enough. Yeah I'll do that tonite...if I don't go see BUCKETHEAD!!!!

No, it means exactly what it says. The firebird speedo is smaller. It may be possible to take the guts from the camaro speedo and use with the firebird gauge face, but even then you'd have to renumber the thing.

Re: camaro speedometer in a trans am?

Ward,
I stand corrected, you are right on the money. The larger camaro speedo's internals may very well be adapted to the "smaller firebired speedo". I played with the camaro speedo (though of the 85mph variety) thinking I would be able to get it to fit into the firebird socket by trimming the od...the trip odometer reset is even in a different location. Having to engage in truly productive activity, I opted to return to this "R&D" adventure in the future.
