Need A New Steering Column. Does It Matter?

Hello,

I have a 1990 IROC with Airbag and Manual Trans. I need to buy a replacement steering column. Does it matter if the replacement I'm buying was originally out of an Automatic Trans?

Thanks

I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work.
The neutral saftey switch should be on the trans, or shifter. Yours would be on the clutch pedal.
Shifter is on the floor board, so that's not an issue.
You might look at a wiring diagram and see if it shows a difference. The only think I can think of at least at the moment is the lack of the button to take the key out of the ignition on a manual trans.

The auto column will have the park lock cable, which locks the shifter in park when the key is off. It can be taken off, but you'll need to disassemble the column, which requires a wheel puller, and gm column lock ring tool. You could also just cut it, or leave it tucked up in the dash and not connected to anything if you have to. Normally it loops around under the dash, then out under the radio, and to the shifter. Also, as kcb mentioned, the manual trans cars got the stupid button thingy to release the key, the auto ones did not. I have no idea what the actual purpose of the button is, maybe some sort of anti-theft or safety thing. However, a column without one will work just fine with a manual trans.
