Strange steering wheel problem

I searched, but, couldn't find this question ever being asked. I'm trying to put a Grant steering wheel on my 89 IROC. It has the stock on now. I tried to use instal kit 3196 but it doen't fit. When I took the old wheel off, the steering wheel column cover extends about half an inch more than it should. So the dust cover will not contact the adapter. If anyone has ideas, it would be a big help. Thanks.

Re: Strange steering wheel problem

I'm not sure whether I had the same problem as you.

I have a '90 Camaro RS 305. It was the first year GM put airbags on a camaro, so I'm not sure whether it's the same as an '89.

But my problem was that the cover that went over the steering column was too long, when I put everything on it was pressed too tightly against the steering column and resulted in the steering wheel not correcting itself as I came out of a turn (scary!)

So what I did was I got my sander and sanded down the entire end of the steering column cover about 1/4 of an inch. And that fixed the problem, just take off a little bit at a time and use trial and error to get it correct.

I've heard of guys using a dremel saw to cut it also.

Good luck, hope this helps.

No bags in an 89. I'm not sure what to tell you. I have a Grant wheel with Grant's billet sleeve on my 85. The fit is perfect. Check it out in my Car Details below if you wish.

Re: Strange steering wheel problem

I had a similar problem on my 92 Camaro. The fit wasn't that bad, maybe only an 1/8" or so of interference. What I did was to cut the cover in the kit down with an angle grinder so it fit properly. In your case, I would cut the column cover down to fit with a Dremel like kkingsrulee mentioned.

Re: Strange steering wheel problem

seems a few of us have this problem . i know i did when installed mine , i had to trim about 1/4" from plastic collar around column . take it slow & easy when trimming collar . you can always trim more off , it's hard to trim some back on . good luck .

Re: Strange steering wheel problem

Yeah, that sounds like my problem. Maybe the previous owner replaced or had the steering column worked on and put in a later model cover. Thanks for the replies. Looks like I will have to cut or sand it down too.
