overhead console reminder wheels rattling

I have the overhead console with the goofy reminder wheels. And they vibrate like crazy at certain engine resonances. Does anyone have any ideas to fix this, beside gluing or taping them?

Or does anybody have a pic of this taken apart? If I remove the console, can I get to the wheels easily?

Thanks,

John

No, you'd have to cut the plastic welds on the following piece (pic 1) to reach the rolls, then cut more to remove them (pic 2). My guess is that one or more of the four welds have broken, allowing the assembly to move. Reassembly would be a nightmare.

Re: overhead console reminder wheels rattling

I had a similar problem, my reminder wheels had gotten loose to where they turned freely since the little clicker tabs had fallen out of place. I figured out a great way to re-secure those so it hold both rollers and the clicker tabs in place nice and tight by putting a small metal bracket on and screwing it in to each side. I would never be able to explain it properly in words, but I can get several good pics and show you that way so their is no question about it. It doesnt show from the outside, only on the inside, and doesnt interfere with the wiring or mounting.

I have to run get dinner now and when I get back I will take some pics and have them up before the day is done. After all the help you gave me on that auto adjusting rear mirror, its the least I can do for you.

Edit: Just realised it wasnt JamesC who was having the problem (he gave me lots of help on my mirror, thanks James!), but all the same, I will have the pics up soon.

Re: overhead console reminder wheels rattling

Ok I got some pics for you. Before proceeding, check those four main welds as JamesC said, if its one of those then melting it back together should end the problem. If its not popped loose on those welds or it still rattles after fixing them, then move on to the next part.

Take a look at the first pic and it has everything labeled. See the two parts (one on each side) labeled in yellow "retainer bracket"? Their should be a black plastic weld at the top of each of these brackets where the little plastic piece inside it (click tab I will call it) pokes through the metal slot and is melted flat to hold it in (labeled in blue). See if either one of those welds is broken off, or if the retainer bracket on either side is loose and will wiggle back and forth. After checking these things, take one hand and squeeze both the retainer brackets together so they are tight against the reminder roller assembly and hold it, then with the other hand try turning your reminder rollers and see if they are much more firm and don't wiggle. (** if one of the welds is broke on the click tab, make sure that the part is still lined up with its little slot hole in the retainer bracket before squeezing it together, so that the tab pops through the slot hole)

On mine one of those welds was broken off (shown in second pic) and the metal retainer bracket would sag out away from the rollers and let the click tab inside fall out of place, since the weld was gone to hold it tight on each end. The rollers and the tab both wiggled and rattled. If squeezing the brackets tightens everything up and makes it feel more sturdy, then move on to the next step. If squeezing and holding the two side retainers together doesn't help any, then you problem is deeper inside and wont be helped by this fix.

If one or both of these retainers is loose on yours so the rollers or the click tab inside wobbles around, then this should take care of it. Get two small flat pieces of metal roughly 1 1/2" long and 3/4" wide. (I used some metal from an old washing machine lid, but anything sturdy will work, old car body metal for instance) You will need to cut the corners off it a bit so it doesn't stick up past the plastic and interfere with mounting, and trim it a bit so it doesn't mash on the plastic weld. (see pictures for an idea of the shape you need) Even if the weld is broken off, you don't want this new bracket covering the slot, since the ends of the click tab will still stick through it from the inside, and you don't want your new bracket to block the hole.

The idea is to get the tab to lay over the retainer bracket so when you put a screw in and tighten it down, it pushes the retainer tight against the sides of the roller assembly, and hold everything inside it firmly in place. When you get the new reinforcement bracket trimmed to a good fit, drill a small hole in the top end of it and then set it in place and mark the hole onto the plastic fins coming down from the roller assembly and drill that. One screw is all that is needed for each side, use a wood screw or something with good threads on it, so it will get a good bite in the plastic and not strip out. **(Warning, don't drill the hole too high up or their wont be enough plastic to adequately hold the screw. The hole should be down 1/8"- 3/16" from the top edge of the fin. (see pics for screw placement) You don't want it much lower than this since the pressure need to be on the top end of the retainer bracket. A small nut and bolt could be used too, and would probably be better, but I used what I had handy that was small enough to fit.

As you tighten each screw, it should push the metal retainer brackets tight against each side, and your rollers will work like new again. Don't get too tight, go slowly so you don't over tighten and strip the holes or break the fin off.

Hopefully this will help out, and not be too confusing. Let me know if you need any more details about a particular step or pics or anything. And good luck.
