Re: Steering Wheel Loose Problem

Ah the dreaded loose 3 bolts. Same thing happened in my 88 camaro. Its not hard to do but does take a couple special tools. It happens to almost all old GM cars eventually . I know there is a how to around here but not sure where it is .

Do a search... There is a tech article, there are exploded diagrams, and step by step illustrated walk throughs. You just need to make an effort to find them.

Search 'loose column' or 'column rebuild' and you'll find more info then you need.

Re: Steering Wheel Loose Problem

well, is it your column or just the steering wheel? I've had steering wheels themselves loosen up too. If that's the case, it's a piece of cake. Pop off your horn button, pull off the lock ring, then tighten the nut, reinstall the lock ring, and put your horn button back on.

If it's your column at the tilt joint, then yeah... time to follow that tech article. That job is a pain in the ***, but it's not particularly difficult. Just take pics along the way so that you can put everything back together correctly and you'll be fine.

Re: Steering Wheel Loose Problem

Are aftermarket wheels supposed to have a lock ring too? The nut for my grant steering wheel keeps backing off.

Re: Steering Wheel Loose Problem

The OEM nut and locking ring are used with the Grant wheels, so yes! Never install any steering wheel without that locking ring. If that nut backs itself all the way off, you'll get a face full of steering wheel right before you get killed.

I've also found that the OEM nut tends to back off with the Grant wheels. A small dab of loctite or a lock washer will fix the problem.

That would make since, sorry i wasn't thinking and i didn't put the wheel on. Guess i'll go look around for a lock ring and some loctite.

Yep. Mine got so loose on a roadtrip that I had to stop at a mom and pop shop and beg for a socket and ratchet. Even with the lock ring, which I added, the nut still loosens up some.

I borrowed the nut from a late model s10 and the wheel seemed alot tighter than i could ever get it with the first nut.
