Roofliner part

Hi guys. The interior in my -86 camaro has been changed sometime before I got my hands on the car. The car is a T-top. On some parts there is handwritten GTX -86, interior colour is red, and has the electrical front seats.

I’m missing the part which covers the seatbelt retractors, and covers the area between the roofliner and the plastic cover (in front of the hatch window).

I’ve been looking for the part at several places, none seem to have the part! I’ve also looked at several posts and pictures here at the forum without finding the right part. On the pictures I’ve seen the roof liner goes all the way back to the plastic part which is in front of the hatch.

Is some of mine roofliner cut off, it doesn’t seem like it, it’s a clean edge? So, it looks like my inner roof is supposed to be three parts, the T-top(roofliner), the missing part(covers the seatbelt retractors) and the plastic part. Is this correct? Where can I buy the missing part?

Cheers

Ps! had some prob upload pic as attachment

Re: Roofliner part

The seat belt retractors covers can't be removed unless you cut a slit in it, or unsew the seat belt buckle...bad idea. That's why you will have little luck to find them. I've seen some NOS ones on eBay, but you will still have to cut it.

The plastic filler panel is made of poor quality ABS an most of them if not all are cracked around the bolt holes. They're hard to find in good condition.

Hi, finely got the pictures uploaded and attached. Here you see the missing roofliner part I’m talking about.

Any suggestions where to by it?

Re: Roofliner part

That's not a seperate piece missing - someone has cut the rear part of the headliner off!

You'll have to get a whole new headliner from somewhere, or else do your best to try and add a piece to your existing headliner. Several places sell an ABS plastic headliner replacement - they seem to work well although I read it's not a 'perfect' fit.

If it were me, I'd scour any local JY's and see if I could snag a headliner - even if to just get the correct shape/length from. If you snagged a decent piece, you could just stiffen it a tad and recover.

These pieces are at best shabby - they were made basically out of a shredded material that's not even as strong as cardboard. Alot of folks have carefully removed their stock headliner and used fiberglass on the roof side to stiffen and strengthen it, recovered them in fabric, and had alot of success with this. It's just that after so many years, they just tend to crumble into dust - I don't think GM ever thought these cars would still be here - or maybe they just didn't care. The 1980's was the beginning of the 'disposable society' mindset afterall.

But there is no missing piece, you'll have to replace or fab something up. Good Luck! Let us know how it goes, and if you fab up something take pics along the way and post how/what you did so we can see!

Re: Roofliner part

That’s what I was afraid of. Neither the local GM dealer could find the missing piece in the part catalogue. Anyway thanks for the answers.

I’ve seen members posting there stories where they are restoring the headliner. It seems like a lot of work, with various outcomes depending on one’s skills.

I think I’m going to by a new plastic headliner. I see posts where some say the plastic headliners we see at different web-stores are made by the same producer. So if that’s true, the quality would be the same. Maybe it’s true, but the price difference is a bit large, from 1A-Auto’s “List price” $346.95 to Hawks “List price” $195.00, to make me think it’s the same producer. 1A-Auto mention that the one they sell has nylon padding, Hawk doesn’t. Both sell them to reduced price, but after shipping is figured in, the price is about the same.

I would appreciate if you could chare your experience reg. difference headliner, also from other web-stores.
