Rear Window Defroster problem.

So here is my dillema. I have a 1986 Trans Am and the rear hatch struts were bad and i replaced them. The guy who had the car before me did some crazy stuff like welding two struts together when one went bad. I now have everything set up the way it should be but when I turn on the rear defroster... the light comes on... and the wires that connect onto the strut start heating up and it melts the sodder and it drips off... Any ideas? Is it possible that if the defroster wires are caroded enough that there is so much resistance that its just heating up?

Thanks
