Weatherstripping and adhesive question
Hello everyone,
I'm going to be replacing all the weatherstripping in my 1986 z28 camaro.
I'm looking at
http://www.1aauto.com/1A/Weatherstri...168/240074/198
and
http://www.1aauto.com/1A/Weatherstri...48/367212/1986
First question is, those two products should be everything I need to replace all the stripping, correct?
Second question is, how hard is this going to be to do on my own having never done it before? I don't want to spend 600 dollars on the stripping and then screw it up lol.
Final question, how much adhesive will I need to do the job? I see they sale 5 oz tubes on 1a
http://www.1aauto.com/1A/Weatherstri...SX00032/251657
But don't know if one tube would be enough?
Thanks for any help!

Re: Weatherstripping and adhesive question
You can get the adhesive at any local car parts show. (advanced, auto zone etc)
As for how much...depends on how well you want it to stick.
I would say at least 2 tubes for a full redo.
I would suggest another pair of arms, you don't want to try it by yourself, it usually ends in disaster. The door strips clip on, everything else is a mix of the two. Window rails are glued in/screwed in.

Re: Weatherstripping and adhesive question
That is what I was afraid of, it being hard enough to that doing it by myself would turn out bad. The problem is I don't have any local friends that do this kind of work so if I don't do it myself I'll end up having to spend another few hundred dollars in labor to have someone else do it for me completely.
I'm a computer programmer and work on my camaro as a hobby of sorts, so most of my friends are in the techy crowd and don't do anything to cars themselves lol.

Re: Weatherstripping and adhesive question
that should cover everything, i think the only thing you're missing between those two skus is the triangle seals at the front of the doors (this one), but not everyone does those.
as for installs, the door seals and trunk are super easy. The t-tops are a bit more tricky, since you need to be certain every bit of old sealant is cleaned off. Its not uncommon for people to find rust in the area, so that's the best time to get things cleaned up and taken care of.
The sweeps will require you take off the inner door panel, so make sure you can roll down your windows. We have had some feedback from customers about the mounting holes not matching up on the outer sweeps. it appears that gm had quite the "tolerance" range for these holes, so occasionally people have had to elongate a hole or two, but nothing serious.
Once I get my bird back on 4 wheel and out from under it's winter cover (probably sometime in the spring/summer), we're going to look into trying to do some install videos for the seals on these cars.

Man, i just realized I totally forgot about getting that triangle seal! Well, back to 1A for another order!

Well, if you have no one else to help you, then just take your time with it, with patience I think you can do it yourself.
Re: Weatherstripping and adhesive question
Anybody can do it if you take your time.
Do a search for a thread I started about replacing the weatherstripping. One thing that alot of people forget is the bridge of rope caulk from the A pillar to the roof channel and the B pillar to roof channel. Also, when removing the stripping from the center channel, don't just rip it out. See how it sits in there. Again, take your time and look at everything as you take it apart and you'll know exactly what to do when putting it back together.
I can't emphasize enough to examine what you're doing especially if you decide to remove the center channel itself. I removed it, cleaned it up, repainted it and reinstalled it. That's when I saw the gaps between the channel and the body and wasn't really sure how it was originally done and how much adhesive to use.

Re: Weatherstripping and adhesive question
I took mine apart about 6 yrs ago, and i am now about to put it all back together, I think I'm gonna have to buy a whole other car, because i have no idea how it goes back together. Keep us posted on your progress and how the kit works out.
