Front bottom of shifter ****, there is a pin or staple type pin, get some needle nose pliers and pull it out forward toward the dash. Now pull the **** off! Whallah!

If it's set too deep into the material for the needle-nose pliers, use a very thin flat screwdriver (like a jewels type) to get it started first.

NOTE: Certain year leather covered ball automatic shifters DO NOT have
the "staple" holding the ball on!
Some (like my 84 Z-28) has C-clips.
To access them you pull out the push button on top of the shifter ball and
look down inside and you can see the C-clip on the shaft.
This does NOT apply to Firebirds or TAs !
They DO use the staple deal.................
But since you didn't state bird or camaro I am just guessing!
the "staple" holding the ball on!
