Take Off Door Panel

I want to take off my mirrors to paint them. Whats the easiest way to remove the door panels? 1987 Camaro Base Model Coupe. No power windows, no power mirrors, no power locks.

Re: Take Off Door Panel

Basically, the door panel just snaps on. Remove the armrest by unscrewing the 3 torx head screws holding it on. Then pop the door lock slider off by using a small screw driver and prying it out from behind. Then remove the door handle trim piece (not all of those screws are really screws, only 2 on the end and one in the middle then theres another screw under one of those panels). then you can just gently (but firmly) pull the panel off. getting it loose on the top is gonna require some strength.

(note this is my experince on a 91 RS, may not be exactly the same on your 87 SC)

Re: Take Off Door Panel

I just swapped my door panels.Using a door panel removal tool made it alot easier to pop the clips and make sure you have your windows all the way down when removing the upper black sill trim. You will also have to remove the window cranks

Re: Take Off Door Panel

If you dont have power windows, yea, the cranks gotta come off. There just held on with a spring type clip. You can get a tool to pop it off or use a thin flat blade screw driver. Just be careful, those clips have a tenancy to go flying....

Re: Take Off Door Panel

I was so impressed when I took mine off to fix a mirror. The factory plastic water protector was still in factory condition. After doing it once easy to do again. After putting back together I noticed I had air noise from window, had to take off again to adjust the felt window protector things..

Re: Take Off Door Panel

I have an 87 GTA and couldn't figure out how to take the plastic panel off that the inside door latch comes through. I unbolted it from the door and popped out the power door lock buttons but the piece still won't come off because the inside handle comes through the plastic and it looked like it would break if I tried pulling in it. Also the sliding door lock lever in side prevents me from turning that piece around at any different angles so what do I do? I need to change the door locks out ASAP

Re: Take Off Door Panel

I got the screw behind the bird emblem. The inner door handle wine slide through the plastic trim piece . The manual slide locking lever is also holding that trim panrel in place.

Re: Take Off Door Panel

Take a small flatblade screwdriver and pry out the slider pieces from behind right by the edge. They might be a bit tight from age.once you have them off you should be able to just rotate the piece off of the inside door release handle

Re: Take Off Door Panel

Oh shoot I hope it's that easy. I'll try it again and see if I can get it off. I need to replace the door locks. I also ordered new handles in black since somwhere along the line chrome were added. Does the window glass have to come out to replace the door handles? I know on my 2nd gen the glass has to come out. Also what is the best lube to use to grease up the power door lock actuators and power woundwort motors? I figure it's a good time to get in there and lube up everything. The power door locks work but you have to hold the button in and it takes a moment for them to slide over and pop. I know white lithium grease gums up in a fairly short while.

Re: Take Off Door Panel

A dry film lube works the best it turns dry like a dark grey powder a few min. after you spray it. doesn't leave anything sticky.
