Tilt Steering Broke

Driving home last night on the interstate, my steering colum just fell down. It's like something in the Tilt feature (the part that locks it into place) just snapped. Now my steering wheel wants to slide up and down all over the place and it made for a rather stressful scary drive home. Not to mention that when I go to turn the steering wheel, on sharp turns it catchs the lock and nearly locks up from turning it. I have to muscle it slightly to keep the wheel turning in the direction I wanted to go.

I noticed that when I turn the iginition off the switch feels funny since this happened too. When I turn the key back, it doesn't turn as much as it used to/supposed to. It just basically slides back a touch to turn it into the off position.

Any idea what might be wrong with it and how I might fix it? It's very unsafe to drive like this with the Steering wheel sliding up and down all over the place.

remove the Negative battery terminal. (some people remove the air bag fuse too but you dont have to.) there is 4 torx screws on the back of the steering wheel, loosen them little by little, one by one, then when the air bag is off un-plug the plug that is right on the back of the air bag. now its off

Re: Tilt Steering Broke

Question: While i have the steering wheel off, what is the proper way to fix the horn? The connectors don't work around the air bag any more. (I have a 1991 Trans Am.)
